Superomniphobic coatings and methods of preparation

A composition useful for producing a superomniphobic coating on a substrate, the composition comprising a colloidal suspension of a fluorinated siloxane in a non-silicon-containing fluorinated solvent. In some embodiments, the composition further comprises particles of a hydrophobized metal oxide, e.g., silicon oxide, wherein the hydrophobized metal oxide may be fluorinated. In some embodiments, the composition further comprises a non-silicon-containing fluorinated polymer. The invention is also directed to methods for making the above composition. The invention is also directed to methods for using the above-described composition for rendering a substrate superomniphobic. The aforesaid method comprises depositing a liquid coating solution onto a substrate to form a coated substrate, followed by subjecting the coated substrate to a drying step to remove a liquid phase of the liquid coating solution, wherein the liquid coating solution comprises a colloidal suspension of a fluorinated siloxane in a non-silicon-containing fluorinated solvent.

Trichloroethylene replacements for the cleaning of silicone oil used in the internal gelation process

Silicone oil continues to be used as a gelation medium for internal gelation process. Typically, the silicone oil has been removed from the gel spheres using trichloroethylene (TCE) washes. However, TCE is no longer a viable option for large-scale operations because of environmental issues, health concerns, and disposal costs. Furthermore, during the development of a large gelation system at the Y-12 National Security Complex, two new TCE wash replacements were identified. NuSolv SOR-C and FluoSolv WS were used in a number of uranium runs and found to effectively remove silicone oil. NuSolv SOR-C was determined to be the best option.

Determining Outgassing of Foam Packaging Material

When transporting highly radioactive material, it is vital to provide a successful delivery. Without proper containment, radioactive materials can become exposed to the surrounding environment and pose a serious threat. To ensure a safe transition of radioactive material, packaging components must be able to withstand high levels of heat during the event of a fire while maintaining the integrity of the structure to safety contain the radioactive material. Various types of polyurethane and silicone have been selected to observe at high temperatures to analyze outgassing characteristics of the materials.
