Experiences and Lessons from Field Demonstration of Grid-forming Inverter in An AC Microgrid

The validation of GFM control strategies through simulation and hardware demonstration is important before their large-scale deployments in the real grid. Considering the importance of testing and validation, several works have explored the GFM inverter’s capability to blackstart a microgrid, synchronize and share loads, and interact with various types of generation sources and loads present in the grid. Herein, this paper complements the existing works by presenting the results and analysis of a field demonstration in an actual AC microgrid. The capability of a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) GFM inverter equipped with a recursive feedback type of non-linear device level control to operate with PV source on its DC input and off-the-shelf PVGFL inverters and EV chargers of different kinds on the AC side is explored. The analysis and conclusions drawn would inform the readers to make better decisions during the field demonstration process.

Resilient Consensus State Observer for Nonlinear Systems and Against Attacks

Herein, we investigate the design of a resilient consensus observer that yields correct and continuous state estimates of a nonlinear control system whose state observations are subject to attacks. The observations are assumed to be obtained from multiple sensors and/or communication channels employed to provide redundancy. It is shown that, in an attack-free setting, individual globally convergent observers can be designed for each sensor/channel using the corresponding state-dependent Jacobian system. To counter attacks, a resilient consensus observer is then designed by merging the observers estimates to produce a smooth consensus estimate. Resilient convergence of the consensus estimate to the true state is ensured under the condition that the sparsity of the attacks being less than a half of the number of redundant channels. As an illustrative example, the proposed scheme is successfully applied to the chaotic circuit synchronization problem in which their synchronization has been attacked.

Autonomous Inverter Controls for Resilient and Secure Grid Operation: Vector Control Design for Grid Forming

The project addresses both fundamental and practical challenges of GFM/GFL inverter control for the power grids with high inverter based resources (IBRs) penetration. A data- driven modeling technique is applied to accurately model dynamics of PWM inverters, including electromagnetic-transient (EMT). Systematic and integrative designs of grid- forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) primary controls are developed to guarantee system performance under either normal or abnormal operating conditions without violating constraints. This modeling and control framework provides black-start capability in case of an outage without relying on rotating generators, and its secondary control is also shown to enhance resilience against cyber-physical attacks.
