A number of issues involving grain charging in the interstellar medium were discussed. Such effects include: (1) stark broadening of molecular spectral features, (2) electrostatic grain rupturing, (3) enhancements in particle-grain collision cross sections, and (4) excitation of molecular rotations and/or vibrations.
A diagram is presented for the UCSD low background infrared spot scanner. The spot scanner parameters are outlined. The testing that is planned for the charge injection device is outlined. The Aerojet linear 128 element array is also outlined.
The development of X-ray grid collimators at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory is considered with attention given to grid design (patterns and artwork for masters, materials, layout of grid patterns), mounting techniques (index housings, L-bar and T-bar housings, U-housings, rectangular housings). Alignment techniques (adjustable frames and alignment telescope, adjustable frames and on-axis and off-axis telescopes) are considered along with test procedures (plane parallel X-ray beam, convolved response).
A scatter-hole X-ray camera has been designed and flown in a rocket to measure solar X radiation. Its distinguishing feature is that many single pin-hole images are allowed to overlap - a multiplexing approach that saves space, gives practical signal-to-fog ratio, and requires special object reconstruction techniques. It was possible to reconstruct the appearance of the dominant source of solar emission on the day of rocket flight with better than one arc minute resolution. The coronal X-ray region had the same general shape and intensity distribution as the associated calcium K-line region.
