Cryogenic insulation strength and bond tester

A method and apparatus for testing the tensile strength and bonding strength of sprayed-on foam insulation attached to metal cryogenic fuel tanks is described. A circular cutter is used to cut the insulation down to the surface of the metal tank to form plugs of the insulation for testing in situ on the tank. The apparatus comprises an electromechanical pulling device powered by a belt battery pack. The pulling device comprises a motor driving a mechanical pulling structure comprising a horizontal shaft connected to two bell cracks which are connected to a central member. When the lower end of member is attached to a fitting, which in turn is bonded to a plug, a pulling force is exerted on the plug sufficient to rupture it. The force necessary to rupture the plug or pull it loose is displayed as a digital read-out.

Controlled overspray spray nozzle

A spray system for a multi-ingredient ablative material wherein a nozzle A is utilized for suppressing overspray is described. The nozzle includes a cyclindrical inlet which converges to a restricted throat. A curved juncture between the cylindrical inlet and the convergent portion affords unrestricted and uninterrupted flow of the ablative material. A divergent bell-shaped chamber and adjustable nozzle exit B is utilized which provides a highly effective spray pattern in suppressing overspray to an acceptable level and producing a homogeneous jet of material that adheres well to the substrate.

Spraying suspensions uniformly

With head on each of its ends, bolt can be disengaged from its blind side. Bolt has conventional hexagonal head on one end and smaller hexagonal head on its threaded end. Since reduced head is smaller than bolt diameter, it does not interfere with insertion of bolt shank in bolthole. However, it can be turned by wrench to release bolt from its blind (threaded) end. Bolt should be tethered on its large-head end so that it does not drop away from assembly.

SRB-TPS spray nozzle development for MSA-1 application

Different overspray suppression schemes are presented. A spray nozzle system for the Marshall Sprayable Ablator (MAS-1) material was developed. As a result of the development for MAS-1 a substantial cost and time saving was achieved by permitting a continuous spray operation.

Fluid-connector selection

Usefulness of dynamic programming for systems design is illustrated by study on selection of separable bolted connectors for aerospace applications. Report should be of specific interest to those considering other dynamic programming applications in fields such as construction of refineries, chemical plants, and electronics.

A separable fluid connector system effectiveness evaluation technique

An analytical technique is presented for evaluating the relationship among existing numerous separable fluid connector designs to find that configuration which is best (optimal). The data utilized in this research was acquired from approximately 900 flanges designed for six sub-systems of the S-1B stage of the Saturn 1B Space Vehicle. The method is general enough to be useful in optimizing design and systematizing decision-making in a variety of related technical fields.

Design standards for low-profile flanges

Analysis of low-profile flange is based on thin shell theory and simple ring theory. Program produces comprehensive design procedure with subsequent stress and deformation analysis. Program was written in FORTRAN IV for UNIVAC 1108 computer.

An assessment of separable fluid connector system parameters to perform a connector system design optimization study

The key to optimization of design where there are a large number of variables, all of which may not be known precisely, lies in the mathematical tool of dynamic programming developed by Bellman. This methodology can lead to optimized solutions to the design of critical systems in a minimum amount of time, even when there are a great number of acceptable configurations to be considered. To demonstrate the usefulness of dynamic programming, an analytical method is developed for evaluating the relationship among existing numerous connector designs to find the optimum configuration. The data utilized in the study were generated from 900 flanges designed for six subsystems of the S-1B stage of the Saturn 1B space carrier vehicle.
