Investigation of the Martian environment by infrared spectroscopy on Mariner 9.

Preliminary analysis of Mariner 9 IR spectroscopic data through May 1972 shows spectral features due to carbon dioxide, water vapor, and silicate dust suspended in the atmosphere. Measurements obtained during and after the planet-wide dust storm indicate that large diurnal variations in atmospheric temperature existed up to at least 30 km. Analysis of spectral features due to the atmospheric dust provides a SiO2 content of 60 (plus or minus 10)%, implying substantial geochemical differentiation. Water vapor estimates yield abundances of 10 to 20 precipitable microns, and no water vapor was detected over the north polar region.

Investigation of the Martian environment by infrared spectroscopy on Mariner 9

Measurements obtained during and after the planet-wide dust storm indicate that large diurnal variations in atmospheric temperature existed up to at least 30 km; winds inferred from the temperature fields show a strong tidal component and significant ageostrophic behavior. With the dissipation of the dust, the daily maximum in the atmospheric temperature field moved from approximately latitude -60 and late afternoon local time to near the subsolar point in latitude and time. Analysis of spectral features due to the atmospheric dust indicates as SIO2 content of 60 ? 10%, implying that substantial geochemical differentiation has occurred. Water vapor estimates indicate abundances of 10 to 20 precipitable micrometers. Between November 1971 and April 1972 no gross latitudinal or temporal dependence in the water vapor distribution was detected from the south polar region to the equator. Water vapor was not detected over the north polar regions. Surface pressure mapping was carried out from which topographic relief of nearly two pressure scale heights is inferred. Extensive regions were found where the surface pressure exceeds the triple point pressure of water.

Atmospheric wind fields derived from Nimbus ozone measurements

The global ozone measurements made by the Nimbus 3 IRIS were used to trace the circulation in the upper troposphere. This was possible because the atmospheric ozone content is closely related to the geopotential heights in the upper troposphere. There is a linear relationship between 200 mbar geopotential heights and the total ozone measured by Nimbus 3. With the help of the geostrophic law, atmospheric winds can be derived from the horizontal gradient of the geopotential heights. Utilizing the linear relationship shown, winds can be deduced from satellite measurements of total ozone.

The Nimbus 4 infrared spectroscopy experiment. I - Calibrated thermal emission spectra.

Measurement of the infrared spectrum of the earth and atmosphere between 400 and 1600/cm. In an effort to obtain spectra with high absolute accuracy, it was necessary to incorporate many factors into the calibration, including small departures from unity in the emissivity of the on-board calibration source, imbalance between cold and warm calibration ports, and effects due to orbital variations in instrument temperature. The inclusion of such higher order corrections, along with careful data screening processes, has ensured a high quality data set that can be used in a variety of geophysical and meteorological investigations. Representative samples of data are presented that illustrate the behavior of the thermal emission spectra under a variety of conditions encountered in a typical orbit, including extremes in temperature, surface reststrahlung (or residual ray) effects, and various types of cloud conditions.

Air-sea interaction in the tropical Pacific Ocean

Charts of 3-month sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean were produced for the period 1949 to 1970. The anomalies along the United States and South American west coasts and in the eastern tropical Pacific appeared to be oscillating in phase during this period. Similarly, the satellite-derived cloudiness for each of four quadrants of the Pacific Ocean (130 deg E to 100 deg W, 30 deg N to 25 deg S) appeared to be oscillating in phase. In addition, a global tropical cloudiness oscillation from 30 deg N to 30 deg S was noted from 1965 to 1970, by using monthly satellite television nephanalyses. The SST anomalies were found to have a good degree of correlation both positive and negative with the following monthly geophysical parameters: (1) satellite-derived cloudiness, (2) strength of the North and South Pacific semipermanent anticyclones, (3) tropical Pacific island rainfall, and (4) Darwin surface pressure. Several strong direct local and crossequatorial relationships were noted. In particular, the high degree of correlation between the tropical island rainfall and the SST anomalies (r = +0.93) permitted the derivation of SST's for the tropical Pacific back to 1905. The close occurrence of cold tropical SST and North Pacific 700-mb positive height anomalies with central United States drought conditions was noted.

Infrared spectroscopy experiment on Mariner 9: Preliminary results

The Mariner 9 infrared spectroscopy experiment has provided good quality spectra of many areas of Mars, predominantly in the Southern Hemisphere. Large portions of the thermal emission spectra are significantly affected by dust with a silicon oxide content approximately corresponding to that of an intermediate igneous rock, implying that Mars has undergone a substantial geochemical differentiation. Derived temperature profiles indicate a warm daytime upper atmosphere with a strong warming over the south polar cap. Atmospheric water vapor is clearly observed over the south polar area and less strongly over other regions.

Elimination of cloud effects in sensing ozone from 9.6 micron band.

Description of an objective method for extracting the spectral information from the 9.6 micron region pertaining to atmospheric ozone. This method has been developed by examining a large number of Nimbus 4 infrared interferometer-spectrometer spectra. The method is capable of eliminating, not only the effects of clouds, but also those of interference from the reststrahlen bands of desert sands.

Global distribution of total ozone derived from Nimbus 3 satellite during April July, 1969 and its implication to upper tropospheric circulation

Utilizing a stepwise multiple regression scheme, monthly mean global maps of total ozone are produced from the spectral intensity measurements made by the infrared interferometer spectrometer (IRIS) onboard the Nimbus 3 satellite for the period April 18 to July 22, 1969. These maps show that over the equatorial regions total ozone increases steadily from April to July. Further, latitudinal variation of total ozone derived from these maps shows that the ozone increases at all latitudes over the Southern Hemisphere uniformly from April to July while over the Northern Hemisphere the monthly decrease at all latitudes is nonuniform. In general, these maps bear a close resemblance to the upper tropospheric circulation. It is observed that the total ozone is best correlated with the 200 mb geopotential heights. This relationship enables the utilization of total ozone as a quasi-stream function to determine geostrophic winds at 200 mb level. Further, even at low latitudes where the total ozone does not bear simple relationship to the geopotential heights the course of the easterly jet stream with the help of the ozone measurements can be identified.

Vertical sounding of the atmosphere with the Nimbus IV infrared spectrometer experiment.

Nimbus III and IV meteorological satellite data obtained on a Michelson interferometer are used as a basis for sounding the vertical temperature and water-vapor and ozone content profiles in the atmosphere. Selection of suitable locations and bandwidths for making such soundings efficient is discussed. Several transmittance models of the atmosphere, and terrain properties and cloud emissivity effects as factors influencing the sounding results are considered.
