Proceedings of the Space Shuttle Environmental Assessment Workshop on Stratospheric Effects

Various aspects of the potential environmental impact of space shuttle exhaust are explored. Topics include: (1) increased ultraviolet radiation levels in the biosphere due to destruction of atmospheric ozone; (2) climatic changes due to aerosol particles affecting the planetary albedo; (3) space shuttle propellants (including alternate formulations); and (4) measurement of space shuttle exhaust products.

Flight performance of the Skylab earth resources experiment package

The earth resources experiment package consisted of six facility-type sensors, which were flown on the Skylab spacecraft to collect data for a large group of investigators. For satisfactory interpretation of their data, many of these investigators required knowledge of the actual realized sensor performance, which may have differed from ground-based test performance. Functional, geometric, and radiometric evaluations of each sensor were made by using flight data from selected ground scenes, the moon, and dark space. As a result of these evaluations made during the Skylab missions, several sensor operation anomalies were identified and the appropriate corrective action was taken.

Complex infrared emission features in the spectrum of beta Lyrae

Spectra of beta Lyrae over the spectral region from 5800 to 11,000 per cm (1.76 to 0.9 micron) at two different phases have been obtained. They show a remarkable emission-absorption complex at 9231 per cm, a highly structured emission at P beta, and several additional broad weak emissions.

Near-infrared spectra of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus

Near infrared spectra of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus were measured at resolutions higher than previously available in the range from 6,000 to 10,750/cm. The resolution was 0.5/cm for Jupiter and Saturn, and 32/cm for Uranus. The spectra are presented both individually and as ratio spectra, in which the planetary spectra are divided by the solar spectrum. The Uranus spectrum is shown with Saturn, Jupiter, and Sun spectra reduced to the same resolution so that Uranus can be compared with the other outer planets. The high resolution Saturn, Jupiter, and Sun spectra are presented in parallel plots to simplify comparisons between them.

Infrared spectra of gamma-2 Velorum and zeta Puppis

Observations of gamma-2 Vel and zeta Pup are presented for the spectral region 5800-11,000 per cm, at resolutions of 2 and 4 per cm, respectively. This constitutes the first reported spectroscopy of a Wolf-Rayet star beyond 1.1 microns. The new spectral region contained numerous emission features for the WC8 component of gamma-2 Vel, but only the P-beta line in absorption for the O4f star zeta Pup. Line identifications are given for gamma-2 Vel and are shown to be consistent with visual spectroscopy. The species identified are H, He I-II, and C II-IV.

Summary of flight performance of the Skylab Earth Resources Experiment Package /EREP/

A group of six remote sensor systems (sensing visible, infrared, and microwave radiation) known as the Earth Resources Experiment Package (EREP) was flown on the NASA Skylab spacecraft to furnish data to numerous investigators in the earth sciences and in technology assessment. Inflight sensor performance in three categories (functional, geometric, and radiometric) was evaluated using: (1) ground measurements of surface, atmospheric, and illumination parameters; (2) ground deployment and operation of microwave receivers and transponders to monitor and excite the active EREP sensors; (3) measurement of surface and atmospheric parameters by instrumented aircraft on underflights of Skylab passes; and (4) analysis of the actual flight data. This resulted in identification and correction of anomalous sensor operation, quantization of geometric distortions or aberrations, improvement or confirmation of calibrations, and determination of sensitivity, accuracy, and stability of the sensors.

Paschen beta emission in the spectrum of Omicron Ceti.

Evaluation of three infrared spectra of Omicron Ceti obtained on Aug. 7 to 11, 1969. The equivalent width of the Paschen beta emission line in these spectra was found to vary by a factor of 2 during this time period. The variation was similar to that for H gamma and H delta as measured by Odell et al. (1970) for the same time span. The equivalent widths of Paschen beta and H gamma on August 7 were used to estimate an opacity ratio of kappa (1.28 micron)/kappa (0.43 micron) about equal to 1:30 and a molecular/atomic hydrogen ratio of about 10. The variation in the strength of Paschen beta and H delta lines is considered to be intrinsic and to have a time scale of less than or about equal to 100,000 sec.

The infrared spectrum of IC 418.

Observations of the intensities of the Paschen lines in the spectrum of IC 418 together with published measurements of the Balmer-line intensities are utilized to derive a reddening constant, c = 0.31. Two additional emission lines, one at 1.087 micron and the second at 1.698 micron, are briefly discussed.

Quenching of vibrationally excited hydroxyl /v = 9/ with oxygen.

In the experiment discussed molecular oxygen was allowed to mix with atomic hydrogen and ozone at the entrance to a 3-m flow tube. A rate equation for the decay of the vibrationally excited hydroxyl is derived, taking into consideration the reaction with ozone, radiative decay, wall quenching, and interaction with molecular oxygen. It is pointed out that molecular oxygen might be important as a quencher for the hydroxyl airglow in the upper atmosphere in spite of negative results obtained in fast-flow experiments conducted in the laboratory.-
