Presupernova evolution in massive interacting binaries

The way in which binary interaction affects the presupernova evolution of massive close binaries and the resulting supernova explosions is investigated systematically by means of a Henyey-type stellar evolution code that was modified to allow its application to binary stellar evolution calculations. The code makes it possible to trace the effects of mass and angular momentum loss from the binary, as well as mass transfer within the binary system. It is found that a large number of binary scenarios can be distinguished, depending on the type of binary interaction and the evolutionary stage of the supernova progenitor at the time of the interaction. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to estimate the frequencies of the occurrence of various scenarios. It is found that, because of a previous binary interaction, 15-30 percent of all massive stars (with initial masses greater than about 8 solar masses) become helium stars, and another 5 percent of all massive stars end their lives as blue supergiants rather than as red supergiants.

An alternative binary model for SN1987A

A class of models for SN1987A is proposed in which the blue supergiant Sk -69 deg 202 is the progenitor and where the supernova evolution of this star is strongly influenced by the accretion of matter from a companion star which was initially the more massive star. Binary stellar evolution calculations show that a model of this type can naturally explain why the apparent progenitor was a blue supergiant rather than a red one. The system became unbound after the supernova event, and the presence of a normal or neutron-star companion will probably be revealed a few years after the explosion. A model of this type can explain all the major observational features of SN1987A and also provides plausible explanations for many of its anomalies.

Binary models for the progenitor of SN 1987A

Binary models are used to examine the possibility that the progenitor of SN 1987 is a component of a binary system. Certain ranges of parameter space in which binary evolution produces progenitors that are applicable to models of SN 1987A are considered. The proposed binary models are capable of making definite predictions that can be checked against observations.

Is supernova 1987A a stripped asymptotic-branch giant in a binary system?

It is proposed that the progenitor of supernova 1987A was a previously undetected red star in orbit about a blue supergiant. The progenitor was the remnant of an asymptotic-branch giant that had lost most of its hydrogen-rich envelope to its blue companion by type C mass transfer. A detailed evolutionary model strongly supports the feasibility of this proposition. It is found that the original mass of the supernova precursor was 10-15 solar (unless a large fraction of the mass was ejected from the binary sytem), and its final mass, just before the supernova event, was 3-6 solar. The system remained bound, with a new orbital period of 3-10 yr and an eccentricity of 0.1-0.4. This picture can provide plausible qualitative explanations for several anomalies in the observational properties of this supernova.
