The Evolution of CTB-109

The subject grant is for the analysis of XMM observations of the galactic supernova remnant CTB-109. As of the writing of this report, the XMM observations have not been conducted yet. We have begun gaining experience with the XMM analysis SW and calibration files so that we can more quickly analyze our data once they become available. We have downloaded the latest version of the XMM standard analysis SW (SAS 5.1). We have downloaded some of the public calibration datasets and started manipulating them using the SAS SW.

A High Resolution Study of the X-Ray Emission From 3C400.2

The ROSAT HRI observation of 3C400.2 was conducted and the data have been received by the PI. The data have been processed using the Extended Source Analysis SW (ESAS) developed by Steve Snowden for the analysis of extended objects with ROSAT. The ESAS SW models and subtracts the particle background of the ROSAT HRI which is the dominant contributor to the non-cosmic background in the HRI. The background-subtracted image was smoothed with an adaptive-smoothing algorithm in order to enhance faint structure but also to maintain the superb angular resolution of the HRI where a sufficient number of counts were available. We have also used the ESAS SW to analyze the existing archival PSPC data. We have generated background-subtracted and merged images from the multiple PSPC observations. In the future, we will conduct a detailed comparison between the HRI and PSPC images. In addition, we plan to use the existing archival ASCA data to better determine the spectrum as a function of position in the remnant. The PI has not been able to finish the analysis and write the paper due to his demands on his time supporting operations of the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The PI will have more time in the coming year and hopes to finish the analysis.

Peculiar Hot Spots in the Monogem Ring Region

The subject grant is for the analysis of an ASCA observation of a bright extended object detected during the ROSAT All-sky Survey. The purpose of the proposal is to identify the nature of the source. The likely possibilities are a galactic supernova remnant and nearby cluster. There has been no progress on writing the paper for this analysis given that the PI has been consumed with the first year of Chandra operations. Nevertheless, these observations and the followup optical observations confirm that the source is a cluster of galaxies. The PI hopes to finish the analysis and the paper this year.

1) The Evolution of CTB 109, 2) A Study of the Composite Remnant MSH 15-56

The subject grant is for the analysis of ASCA (Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics) observations of two well-known galactic Supernova Remnants, CTB 109 and MSH 15-56. The purpose of the proposal is to study spectral differences as a function of position within each of the remnants.
