Site characterization rover missions

Concepts for site characterization rovers capable of efficient operation on Mars with human supervision from earth are discussed. In particular, attention is given to strategies for developing and evaluating the necessary technology for implementing the roving vehicles and process technologies required for a systematic and integrated implementation of technologically advanced rovers. A vehicle testbed program is also described.

A goal and strategy for human exploration of the moon and Mars

Eventual settlement of the solar system, beginning with the moon and Mars, is proposed, and a strategy for the exploration of and initial settlement of the moon and Mars, based on the model of European settlement of the Americas, is discussed. Strategies suggest an allocation of functions between humans and telerobots to conduct the exploration and initial settlement.

Mars rover 1988 concepts

Results of FY88 studies of a sample-collecting Mars rover are presented. A variety of rover concepts are discussed which include different technical approaches to rover functions. The performance of rovers with different levels of automation is described and compared to the science requirement for 20 to 40 km to be traversed on the Martian surface and for 100 rock and soil samples to be collected. The analysis shows that a considerable amount of automation in roving and sampling is required to meet this requirement. Additional performance evaluation shows that advanced RTG's producing 500 W and 350 WHr of battery storage are needed to supply the rover.

Mars Rover options

The paper will describe a nested set of Mars Rover options which are being considered. The option ranges include: low-to-high levels of technology, especially in autonomous activities; low (400 kg) to high (1500 kg) allowable mass; and coarse (100-meter) to fine (1-meter) knowledge of the terrain to be traversed. The options which will be selected for further study at the end of FY 1988 will be heavily dependent on such factors as the availability of precursor mission data (especially imaging) and the bounds on mass and volume imposed by the launch, Martian entry, and landing systems.

NASA's Telerobotics R & D Program - Status and future directions

NASA's telerobotics technology program is described as well as the process for the transfer of this technology to the Space Station, and some of the implications of the technology for station design and operations, including those for international cooperation. A diagram is presented of the NASREM control heirarchy with the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology telerobot testbed architecture superimposed. In telerobotics, the following areas were identified as possible subjects for developing data to support international standards: (1) task boards, (2) system performance measures on task boards, (3) human performance measures on task boards with teleoperation, and (4) autonomous-telerobotic-teleoperated performance comparisons.
