Correlation of hard X-ray and type 3 bursts in solar flares

Correlations between X-ray and type 3 radio emission of solar bursts are described through a bivariate distribution function. Procedures for determining the form of this distribution are described. A model is constructed to explain the correlation between the X-ray spectral index and the ratio of X-ray to radio intensities. Implications of the model are discussed.

The impulsive phase of solar flares. 2: Characteristics of the hard X-rays

The results of an investigation into the electron distribution in the general non-thermal models of solar flares were used to calculate the characteristics of the impulsive hard X-rays. The height distribution, the spectrum, the polarization, and directivity of the X-rays were observed and how these X-ray characteristics are affected by the parameters defining the model was investigated. An expression is obtained for the X-ray intensity as a function of source height which is an excellent fit under certain constraints. Some available data with spatial resolution are examined and it is shown that it is possible to reproduce these data adequately with the non-thermal model and to determine the values of the parameters describing the flares.

Synchrotron emissivity from mildly relativistic particles

A simple approximate method for the evaluation of the spectrum and directivity of the synchrotron radiation from an ensemble of particles in a given magnetic field is considered, taking into account the results of this method for the total emissivity at high harmonics. The general formula is presented along with the details of the derivation of the emissivity for an arbitrary energy spectrum and pitch angle distribution of particles. The emissivities for some commonly encountered particle distributions are provided and some empirical formulae valid for a large range of the parameters are given. The results from the analytic expressions are compared with those obtained by detailed numerical calculations. For isotropic pitch angle distributions, spectra from the simple analytic expressions agree with the numerical results to a high degree of accuracy even at lower harmonics.

Impulsive phase of solar flares. I - Characteristics of high energy electrons

The models describing the operative physical processes occurring during the impulsive phase of a solar flare can be broadly classified as thermal or nonthermal models. The current investigation is part of a series of studies which analyze the general characteristics of the 'nonthermal' models. The results are presented of an analysis regarding the steady state distribution of energetic electrons within the flare plasma. The time independent Fokker-Planck equation is used to determine the steady state distribution of the electrons in the ambient plasma. The model investigated encompasses thick-target, thin-target, and trap aspects of nonthermal hard X-ray models. High energy electrons with some initial energy spectrum and pitch angle distribution are injected at a height above the photosphere either into a closed magnetic loop structure or into an open field structure. Some approximate analytic solutions are discussed and the results of a numerical analysis are presented.

Structure of impulsive phase of solar flares from microwave observations

Variation of the microwave intensity and spectrum due to gyro-synchrotron radiation from semi-relativistic particles injected at the top of a closed magnetic loop is described. Using the recent high spatial resolution X-ray observations from the HXIS experiment of Solar Maximum Mission and from observations by the Very Large Array (VLA), it is shown that the high microwave brightness observed at the top of the flare loop can come about if (1) the magnetic field from top to footpoints of the loop does not increase very rapidly, and (2) the accelerated particles injected in the loop have a nearly isotropic pitch angle distribution. The limits on the rate of increase of the magnetic field and/or the average pitch angle depend on the geometry and location of the loop on the solar disk.

Synchrotron emissivity from mildly relativistic particles

Approximate analytic expressions are presented for evaluation of the frequency and angular dependence of synchrotron emissivity from mildly relativistic particles with arbitrary energy spectrum and pitch angle distribution in a given magnetic field. Results agree with previous expressions for a nonrelativistic Maxwellian particle distribution, and when extrapolated to nonrelativistic and extreme relativistic regimes, they also agree with the previous expressions obtained under those limiting conditions. The results from the analytic expression are compared with results from detailed numerical evaluations. Excellent agreement is found not only at frequencies large compared to the gyro-frequency but also at lower frequencies, in fact, all the way down to the gyro-frequency, where the analytic approximations are expected to be less accurate.

Impulsive phase of solar flares. 1: Characteristics of high energy electrons

The variation along a magnetic field line of the energy and pitch angle distribution of high energy electrons injected into a cold hydrogen plasma containing either an open or closed magnetic field structure was investigated. The problem is formulated as a time independent Fokker-Planck Equation for the electron number distribution as a function of the electron energy, electron pitch angle, and the structure of the global magnetic field. Simple analytic solution valid in the small pitch angle regime and for slowly varying magnetic field is presented. For the more general situation a numerical code for solving the Fokker-Planck Equation was used and it was found that the analytic expression agrees well with the numerical results to values of the pitch angle much larger than expected. For most practical applications, one many confidently use the analytic expression instead of having to resort to lengthy numerical computations. These results are useful in the study of the nonthermal models of the impulsive phase of solar flares.

Radiative transfer in dusty nebulae. III - The effects of dust albedo

The effects of an albedo of internal dust, such as ionization structure and temperature of dust grain, were studied by the quasi-diffusion method with an iterative technique for solving the radiative heat transfer equations. It was found that the generalized on-the-spot approximation solution is adequate for most astrophysical applications for a zero albedo; for a nonzero albedo, the Eddington approximation is more accurate. The albedo increases the average energy of the diffuse photons, increasing the ionization level of hydrogen and heavy elements if the Eddington approximation is applied; the dust thermal gradient is reduced so that the infrared spectrum approaches blackbody spectrum with an increasing albedo.

Impulsive phase of solar flares

The present understanding of the impulsive phase of a solar flare, characterized by short-duration bursts of impulsive hard X-ray, EUV, optical and radio emission indicating the release of energetic electrons is reviewed. Observations of the spectral distribution of impulsive hard X-ray bursts and of Type III and radio continuum bursts are presented and interpreted in terms of energetic electron distributions, and impulsive EUV, XUV, soft X-ray and optical observations, which provide a lower limit to total energy release during the impulsive phase, are discussed. The role of energetic electrons in exciting the hard X-ray, EUV and microwave emissions is considered, and thin-target, thick-target, partial-precipitation and thermal models of impulsive phase electron acceleration are evaluated in light of the observations. It is noted that available data do not allow discrimination between a thermal or a nonthermal electron distribution, on which depends the proportion of flare energy supplied by the energetic electrons, and that data favors models which permit at least partial electron precipitation. Future observational and theoretical work is indicated.

Impulsive solar X-ray bursts. III - Polarization, directivity, and spectrum of the reflected and total bremsstrahlung radiation from a beam of electrons directed toward the photosphere

The paper presents the spectrum, directivity, and state of polarization of the bremsstrahlung radiation expected from a beam of high-energy electrons spiraling along radial magnetic field lines toward the photosphere. A Monte Carlo method is then described for evaluation of the spectrum, directivity, and polarization of X-rays diffusely reflected from stellar photospheres. The accuracy of the technique is evaluated through comparison with analytic results. The calculated characteristics of the incident X-rays are used to evaluate the spectrum, directivity, and polarization of the reflected and total X-ray fluxes. The results are compared with observations.

Surface brightness, standard candles and q/0/

The most direct way to determine the deceleration parameter, q(0), of the universe is through the study of the redshift-magnitude relation of extragalactic sources. Progress has been slow because the necessary sources for this study must be standard candles, which have identical absolute total luminosity (balometric or monochromatic). The present paper shows, first of all, that, although necessary, this is not a sufficient condition for nonpoint-like (or resolved) sources. A modification of the redshift-magnitude relation is then described for a certain class of nonstandard candles using measurements of isophotal surface brightness. It is noted that such measurements can be used to standardize the central surface brightness of galaxies, but the standardization of the scale parameter remains beyond observations.

Surface brightness and evolution of galaxies

It is well known that before the redshift-magnitude diagram of galaxies could be used for determination of the cosmological parameters, one must know the evolution of galaxies. The present letter proposes use of apparent surface brightness - which depends only on redshift and is independent of the cosmological model and the inhomogeneities in the Universe - for observational determination of the evolution of galaxies. The needed observations are isophotal angular diameters and apparent magnitudes within this or any other reasonable angular diameter. The application of the results for determination of the deceleration parameter is discussed briefly.

Approximate solutions of radiative transfer in dusty nebulae. II - Hydrogen and helium

The ionization structure of hydrogen and helium in dusty nebulae is discussed. General equations for pure hydrogen nebulae have been modified to include helium. An approximate analytical solution is presented for Stroemgren radii of hydrogen and helium in the absence of dust. It is shown that these results, with simple modifications, are also applicable to dusty nebulae where the effective absorption cross section of dust grains varies slowly with frequency in the range from 1000 to 200 A. No analytical solutions are possible if this cross section varies rapidly with frequency. In this case, however, simple coupled differential equations are derived which can easily be solved numerically. Approximate analytical expressions are given for evaluating the variation of the fraction of ionizing radiation absorbed by dust and the ratio of the volume emission measures of He II to H II regions with the spectrum of the ionizing source, helium abundance, and absorption properties of dust. The effects of dust on the He III zone are discussed. The present results are restricted to spherically symmetric nebulae, but nonuniform gas and dust distributions and clumpiness can be taken into account by the general results.

Production of hard X rays in a plasma focus

A model of a plasma focus is examined wherein large axial electric fields are produced by an imploding current sheet during the final nanoseconds of the collapse phase and where the fields provide a mechanism for creating a beam of electrons of highly suprathermal energies. The expected bremsstrahlung radiation above 100 keV is calculated for such a beam, which has a power-law spectrum, both from electron-deuteron collisions in the focused plasma and when the beam reaches the wall of the device. It is concluded that, since the experimental results indicate little or no radiation above 100 keV originating in the walls, that the electrons in the beam must be decelerated after leaving the plasma and before reaching the wall. Comparisons with the results and the total energy of the device yield qualitative agreement with the expected angular distribution of hard X-rays and reasonable agreement with the total energy in accelerated electrons required to produce the observed total energy in hard X-rays by this mechanism.
