Small-scale fluctuations and angular correlations of the X-ray background in the HEAO 1 A-2 energy band - Constraints on clustering of X-ray sources

HEAO 1 A-2 all-sky survey data have been used to determine the amplitude of intensity fluctuations of the extragalactic 2-10 keV X-ray background (XRB) over an effective solid angle of 1.84 sq deg and their angular correlation function on angular scales of less than 3 deg. A good empirical fit to the data is obtained assuming that the integral counts in the A-2 band have a slope of 1.65 + 0.06 or - 0.07. Alternatively, the data may imply a significant clustering of extragalactic X-ray sources.

X-ray study of superclusters

The Batuski-Burns list of candidate superclusters was searched for X-ray emission in the HEAO 1 A-2 data base. No significant flux in excess of integrated member cluster emission was detected in directions associated with estimated supercluster centroids; a 3 sigma upper limit to the mean individual excess flux is 5 x 10 to the -12th ergs/sq cm/s. Implications of this bound are discussed in terms of fainter member clusters, hot diffuse gas, and active and normal galaxies. Prospects of supercluster observations related to future X-ray missions are also outlined.

Constraints on large-scale clustering from the autocorrelation properties of the X-ray background

Expectations for the angular correlation function of intensity fluctuations of the extragalacitc 2-10 keV X-ray background are discussed in relation to the two-point spatial correlation functions, xi(r), of X-ray sources. A simple analytic formula for the amplitude of intensity correlations, Gamma(theta), holding in the low-redshift, small-separation approximation, is derived. The HEAO 1 A-2 upper limits on Gamma(theta) have been exploited to derive constraints on the local xi(r) functions of rich clusters of galaxies, of AGNs, and on the AGN-cluster cross-correlation, as well as on evolution of the correlation functions with cosmic time. X-ray data are found to be compatible with the Bahcall and Soneira estimates of xi(cluster-cluster) as well as with the results of recent studies of quasar clustering.

A catalog of X-ray measurements of selected samples of active galaxies and nuclei

X-ray fluxes or upper limits in the 2-10 keV energy band from the HEAO 1 A-2 experiment are given for well-defined samples of QSOs and of Seyfert galaxies of types 1, 1.5 and 2, and for a list of BL Lac objects (334 sources in total). All on-orbit X-ray measurements of these objects published between 1976 and 1986 from other experiments have also been cataloged.

The autocorrelation properties of fluctuations in the cosmic X-ray background

The HEAO 1 A-2 all-sky survey data have been analyzed to investigate the autocorrelation function of the surface brightness fluctuations of the extragalactic 2-10 keV X-ray background on angular scales ranging from 3 to 27 deg. The derived upper limits are compatible with optical estimates of the spatial correlation function of Abell's clusters and set interesting constraints on possible AGN clustering.

X-ray constraints on large scale clustering

HEAO-1 A2 all-sky survey data are analyzed to investigate the autocorrelation function of the surface brightness fluctuations of the extra-galactic 2-10-keV X-ray background on angular scales ranging from 3 to 27 deg. No significant signal has been detected on any scale. The derived upper limits set important bounds on correlated emission on scales of 10 Mpc or greater. X-ray data are found to be compatible with optical estimates of the two-point spatial correlation function of rich clusters of galaxies and with recent predictions for their cosmological evolution. Constraints on clustering of active galactic nuclei and on its dependence on cosmic time are analyzed in the light of results of recent optical studies.

Dark and visible matter in spiral galaxies

Rotation-curve profiles are used to determine the dark-to-luminous mass ratio within the disk size for 43 spiral galaxies. It is noted that faint galaxies are halo-dominated and that bright galaxies are disk-dominated in the disk regions. The luminosity sequence is shown to be a dark-to-luminous sequence. By removing the dark-matter contribution from the velocity at the disk edge, the dispersion affecting the luminosity-kinematics relation is found to decrease in comparison with the conventional Tully-Fisher correlation.

Beaming in blazars

Relativistic beaming of radiation is generally invoked to explain the extreme properties of blazars. The simplest synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) model is applied to all blazars that have been observed in the X-ray region and have known VLBI sizes, and the minimum kinematic Doppler factor for each source is derived. All high polarization quasars (HPQs), but only half of the 30 BL Lac objects in the sample require relativistic enhancement of radiation due to beaming effects. The different Doppler factor distributions for the two classes of sources argue against the hypothesis that BL Lacs could be low-luminosity HPQs whose strong emission lines are swamped out by the boosted nonthermal continuum. Thus HPQs and BL Lacs could be intrinsically different in their physical structure.
