Ordered nanoscale domains by infiltration of block copolymers

A method of preparing tunable inorganic patterned nanofeatures by infiltration of a block copolymer scaffold having a plurality of self-assembled periodic polymer microdomains. The method may be used sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS), related to atomic layer deposition (ALD). The method includes selecting a metal precursor that is configured to selectively react with the copolymer unit defining the microdomain but is substantially non-reactive with another polymer unit of the copolymer. A tunable inorganic features is selectively formed on the microdomain to form a hybrid organic/inorganic composite material of the metal precursor and a co-reactant. The organic component may be optionally removed to obtain an inorganic feature s with patterned nanostructures defined by the configuration of the microdomain.

Hybridization-driven strong anharmonicity in Yb-filled skutterudites

A high-pressure study of the structural and thermal transport properties is carried out on one of the most efficient filled skutterudites, $\mathrm{Yb_{0.3}Co_4Sb_{12}}$, to understand the relatively low thermal conductivity behavior in this family. By combining x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements, we detect a phase transition at around 12.4 GPa. The mode Grüneisen parameters of the observed phonon modes are obtained from the determined bulk modulus and the phonon frequency shifts with pressure. The strong anharmonicity in this material is demonstrated by the obtained large average Grüneisen parameter. We also find the depressed group velocity within the low-frequency range, the flat guest mode avoided crossing with the acoustic-phonon mode, and the significant contribution of optical phonons. The hybridization of the guest atom and host lattice and the related enhanced anharmonicity are suggested to account for the low lattice thermal conductivity in the studied system. So, these findings provide new insight into how phonon-phonon interactions lower lattice thermal conductivity in this important thermoelectric family.

Stable and Catalytically Active Shape-Engineered Cerium Oxide Nanorods by Controlled Doping of Aluminum Cations

Shape-engineered nanocrystals (SENs) promise a better selectivity and a higher activity in catalytic reactions than the corresponding non-shape-engineered ones because of their larger specific surface areas and desirable crystal facets. However, often, it is challenging to apply SENs in practical catalytic applications at high reaction temperatures, where SENs deforms into more stable, less active nanoparticles. In this paper, we show that atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Al 2 O 3 at 200 °C can controllably dope Al cations into the shape-engineered CeO 2 nanorods (NRs) to not only increase their shape transition temperature from 400 °C to beyond 700 °C but also greatly increase their specific reversible oxygen storage capacity (srOSC). Furthermore, the substituted Al3+ ions impede the surface diffusion of Ce ions and therefore improve the thermal stability of CeO 2 NRs. These Al3+ dopants form -Al–O–Ce–O– clusters, which are new Ce species and can be reversibly reduced and oxidized at 500–700 °C. This low-temperature chemical doping method decouples the synthesis process of SENs from the doping process and maintains the shape of the SENs during the activation of dopants. This concept could be adopted to enable the applications of other SENs in challenging high-temperature environments.

Single-atom Rh/N-doped carbon electrocatalyst for formic acid oxidation

To meet the requirements of potential applications, it is of great importance to explore new catalysts for formic acid oxidation that have both ultra-high mass activity and CO resistance. In this work, we successfully synthesize atomically dispersed Rh on N-doped carbon (SA-Rh/CN) and discover that SA-Rh/CN exhibits promising electrocatalytic properties for formic acid oxidation. The mass activity shows 28- and 67-fold enhancements compared with state-of-the-art Pd/C and Pt/C, respectively, despite the low activity of Rh/C. Interestingly, SA-Rh/CN exhibits greatly enhanced tolerance to CO poisoning, and Rh atoms in SA-Rh/CN resist sintering after long-term testing, resulting in excellent catalytic stability. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the formate route is more favourable on SA-Rh/CN. According to calculations, the high barrier to produce CO, together with the relatively unfavourable binding with CO, contribute to its CO tolerance.

Can the Hypothesis 'Photon Interferes only with Itself' be Reconciled with Superposition of Light from Multiple Beams or Sources?

Any superposition effect as measured (SEM) by us is the summation of simultaneous stimulations experienced by a detector due to the presence of multiple copies of a detectee each carrying different values of the same parameter. We discus the cases with light beams carrying same frequency for both diffraction and multiple beam Fabry-Perot interferometer and also a case where the two superposed light beams carry different frequencies. Our key argument is that if light really consists of indivisible elementary particle, photon, then it cannot by itself create superposition effect since the state vector of an elementary particle cannot carry more than one values of any parameter at the same time. Fortunately, semiclassical model explains all light induced interactions using quantized atoms and classical EM wave packet. Classical physics, with its deeper commitment to Reality Ontology, was better prepared to nurture the emergence of Quantum Mechanics and still can provide guidance to explore nature deeper if we pay careful attention to successful classical formulations like Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral.
