Search for dark matter annual modulation with DarkSide-50

Dark matter may induce an event in an Earth-based detector, and its event rate is predicted to show an annual modulation as a result of the Earth’s orbital motion around the Sun. We searched for this modulation signature using the ionization signal of the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. No significant signature compatible with dark matter is observed in the electron recoil equivalent energy range above 40 eV ee , the lowest threshold ever achieved in such a search. Long-term temporal stability of the DarkSide-50 dark matter detector

The stability of a dark matter detector on the timescale of a few years is a key requirement due to the large exposure needed to achieve a competitive sensitivity. It is especially crucial to enable the detector to potentially detect any annual event rate modulation, an expected dark matter signature. Here, in this work, we present the performance history of the DarkSide-50 dual-phase argon time projection chamber over its almost three-year low-radioactivity argon run. In particular, we focus on the electroluminescence signal that enables sensitivity to sub-keV energy depositions. The stability of the electroluminescence yield is found to be better than 0.5%. Finally, we show the temporal evolution of the observed event rate around the sub-keV region being consistent to the background prediction.

Constraining nucleon effective masses with flow and stopping observables from the S π RIT experiment

Properties of the nuclear equation of state (EoS) can be probed by measuring the dynamical properties of nucleus-nucleus collisions. In this study, we present the directed flow (υ 1 ), elliptic flow (υ 2 ) and stopping (VarXZ) measured in fixed target Sn + Sn collisions at 270 AMeV with the SπRIT Time Projection Chamber. We perform Bayesian analyses in which EoS parameters are varied simultaneously within the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics-Skyrme (ImQMD-Sky) transport code to obtain a multivariate correlated constraint. The varied parameters include symmetry energy, S 0 , and slope of the symmetry energy, L, at saturation density, isoscalar effective mass, $m^{⁎}_{S}$/$m_{N}$ , isovector effective mass, $m^{⁎}_{υ}$/$m_{N}$ and the in-medium cross-section enhancement factor η. We find that the flow and VarXZ observables are sensitive to the splitting of proton and neutron effective masses and the in-medium cross-section. Comparisons of ImQMD-Sky predictions to the SπRIT data suggest a narrow range of preferred values for $m^{⁎}_{S}$/$m_{N}$, $m^{⁎}_{υ}$/$m_{N}$ and η.

Search for low mass dark matter in DarkSide-50: the bayesian network approach

Abstract We present a novel approach for the search of dark matter in the DarkSide-50 experiment, relying on Bayesian Networks. This method incorporates the detector response model into the likelihood function, explicitly maintaining the connection with the quantity of interest. No assumptions about the linearity of the problem or the shape of the probability distribution functions are required, and there is no need to morph signal and background spectra as a function of nuisance parameters. By expressing the problem in terms of Bayesian Networks, we have developed an inference algorithm based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo to calculate the posterior probability. A clever description of the detector response model in terms of parametric matrices allows us to study the impact of systematic variations of any parameter on the final results. Our approach not only provides the desired information on the parameter of interest, but also potential constraints on the response model. Our results are consistent with recent published analyses and further refine the parameters of the detector response model.

The S π RIT time projection chamber

The SAMURAI Pion Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker Time Projection Chamber (SπRIT TPC) was designed to enable measurements of heavy ion collisions with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory and provide constraints on the Equation of State of neutron-rich nuclear matter. The SπRIT TPC has a 50.5 cm drift length and an 86.4 cm × 134.4 cm 2 pad plane with 12,096 pads that are equipped with the Generic Electronics for TPCs. The SπRIT TPC allows excellent reconstruction of particles and provides isotopic resolution for pions and other light charged particles across a wide range of energy losses and momenta. Here, details of the SπRIT TPC are presented, along with discussion of the TPC performance based on cosmic ray and charged particles emitted in heavy ion collisions.

Probing the Symmetry Energy with the Spectral Pion Ratio

Many neutron star (NS) properties, such as the proton fraction within a NS, reflect the symmetry energy contributions to the Equation of State that dominate when neutron and proton densities differ strongly. To constrain these contributions at supra-saturation densities, we measure the spectra of charged pions produced by colliding rare isotope tin (Sn) beams with isotopically enriched Sn targets. Here, using ratios of the charged pion spectra measured at high transverse momenta, we deduce the slope of the symmetry energy to be 42 < $L$ < 117 MeV. This value is slightly lower but consistent with the $L$ values deduced from a recent measurement of the neutron skin thickness of 208 Pb.
