Structural Distortions and Short‐Range Magnetism in a Honeycomb Iridate Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6

Layered honeycomb iridates receive significant attention in the materials chemistry and physics fields due to the relevance of their crystal structures to the Kitaev model of a quantum spin liquid (QSL). In quest of liquid‐like magnetic ground state signatures, first‐generation alkali metal iridates A 2 IrO 3 ≡ A 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 (A = Li, Na) and second‐generation iridates T 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 ( T = Cu, Ag, H) are developed. T 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 is synthesized from A 3 [AIr 2 ]O 6 via metathesis reactions replacing alkali ions located between honeycomb layers. Herein, the next level of chemical and structural complexity is introduced by synthesizing the honeycomb iridate, Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6 , in which alkali ions between and within the honeycomb layers are both selectively exchanged with two different transition metals. Analysis of powder X‐Ray diffraction data reveals corrugation of the honeycomb layers in Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6 that hinders complete magnetic frustration and results in a spin glass behavior observed from magnetization and specific heat data. Thus, Cu 3 ZnIr 2 O 6 represents yet another model, which broadens understanding of intricate relationships between intralayer distortions and magnetism of prospective Kitaev QSL compounds.

Designed metal-insulator transition in low-symmetry magnetic intermetallics

Compounds exhibiting half-metallic character and metal-insulator transitions draw considerable attention in condensed-matter and materials physics due to their potential use in spintronics. Here we show that specific electron doping plays a crucial role in tailoring thermodynamic, structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of materials derived from low-symmetry magnetic intermetallics, exemplified on triclinic Mn 4 Al 11 . Upon chemical doping of Al by Ge, we predict improved phase stability and adherence to a generalized “18-n rule” governing closed-shell configurations in intermetallic with narrow bandgaps. Validating experiments include measurements of phase stability and electronic transport properties of electron-doped Mn 4 Al 10 Ge that crystallizes in the Mn 4 Al 11 -type structure, confirming the bandgap opening as predicted by chemical analysis and density-functional theory. Here we also demonstrate theoretically that hydrostatic pressure enhances the predicted half-metallic gap in the up-spin channel, which leads to a ferrimagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition driven by Mn-Mn charge ordering in the Mn 4 Al 11 parent. We have also discussed the generality of our approach in predicting the design of other classes of intermetallics including half and full Heusler compounds.

Enhancement of hard magnetism and chemical order of synthetic L 1 0 -FeNi

An ordered tetragonal L 1 0 -FeNi, also known as meteoritic mineral tetrataenite – a promising rare-earth-free hard-magnetic compound – has been synthesized starting from a mechanochemically-activated disordered cubic A1-FeNi via formation of a chemically-ordered FeNiN intermediate and its subsequent denitrogenation and further purification of the product. The nature of a process control agent employed during the mechanochemical activation of A1-FeNi and ammonia flow velocity during the synthesis of the intermediate are two of the main factors controlling the nitrogenation. Denitrogenation with hydrogen at elevated pressures and at temperatures substantially below the order-disorder L 1 0 -FeNi → A1-FeNi transition preserves the chemical order established in the intermediate nitride. Further, post-synthesis refinement of the L 1 0 -FeNi product includes the removal of residual nitrides with a dilute acid to further improve hard-magnetic properties of the material. The L 1 0 -FeNi powders synthesized using this method exhibit a coercivity as high as 2.3 kOe and a maximum energy product reaching 6 MGOe – the highest values ever reported for a synthetic tetrataenite.

Highly tunable, inexpensive and easily fabricated magnetocaloric materials

A method is provided of making a magnetocaloric alloy composition comprising Ni, Co, Mn, and Ti, which preferably includes certain beneficial substitutional elements, by melting the composition and rapidly solidifying the melted composition at a cooling rate of at least 100 K/second (Kelvin/second) to improve a magnetocaloric property of the composition. The rapidly solidified composition can be heat treated to homogenize the composition and annealed to tune the magneto-structural transition for use in a regenerator.

Anisotropic magneto-resistivity and magnetocaloric effect in DyAl 2

Here, in this study, we experimentally and theoretically investigate the correlation between the anisotropic magnetic resistivity and magnetocaloric effect in DyAl 2 single crystals. DyAl 2 crystallizes in the C15 Laves phase structure with cubic symmetry. While some earlier studies revealed that the isothermal entropy change in dialuminides follows a similar trend as the electrical resistivity change as a function of temperature and magnetic field, the correlation between anisotropic behavior of these two physical parameters is yet to be explored to the best of our knowledge. To address this gap, we measured electrical resistivity of DyAl 2 single crystals along two different directions in zero and applied magnetic fields and compared the experimental results with our theoretical model. For the theoretical analysis, we employed a model Hamiltonian in the mean-field approximation, considering the exchange interaction, Zeeman effect, and crystalline electric field associated with the cubic symmetry. Our findings reveal a significant dependence of DyAl 2 resistivity on the direction of the applied magnetic field, in agreement with our theoretical results. These outcomes emphasize the interplay between magnetocaloric effect and magneto-resistivity, underscoring the potential of the magnetocaloric effect as a valuable tool for gaining deeper insights into basic physical properties including electron transport behavior.

4 d element induced improvement of structural disorder and development of weakly reentrant spin-glass behavior in NiRuMnSn

The pursuit of efficient spin polarization in quaternary Heusler alloys with the general formula XX'YZ (where X, X', and Y are transition metals and Z is a p-block element) has been a subject of significant scientific interest. While previous studies showed that isoelectronic substitution of a 4d element in place of a 3d element in quaternary Heusler alloys improves the half-metallic ferromagnetic characteristics, our research here, on the quaternary Heusler alloy NiRuMnSn, reveals a strikingly different scenario. In this study, we present a detailed structural analysis of the material using x-ray absorption fine structure and neutron diffraction techniques which confirms the formation of a single-phase compound with 50:50 site disorder between Ni and Ru atoms at 4c and 4d sites. Contrary to expectations, our density functional theory calculations suggest a considerable decrease in spin polarization even in the ordered structure. Additionally, we report on the compound's exceptional behavior, displaying a rare reentrant spin-glass property below ~ 60 K, a unique and intriguing feature for quaternary Heusler-type compounds.

Interplay Between Kondo and Magnetic Interactions in Pr 0.75 Gd 0.25 ScGeH

Combined experimental and density functional theory (DFT) study of Pr 0.75 Gd 0.25 ScGe and its hydride (Pr 0.75 Gd 0.25 ScGeH) reveals intricacies of composition-structure-property relationships in those distinctly layered compounds. Hydrogenation of the intermetallic parent, crystalizing in a tetragonal CeScSi-type structure, leads to an anisotropic volume expansion, that is, a(=b) lattice parameter decreases while the lattice expands along the c direction, yielding a net increase of cell volume. DFT calculations predict an antiparallel coupling of localized Gd and Pr magnetic moments in both materials at the ground state. While experiments corroborate this for the parent compound, there is no conclusive experimental proof for the hydride, where Pr moments do not order down to 3 K. DFT results also reveal that rare-earth – hydrogen interactions reduce spin-polarization of the Pr and Gd 5d and Sc 3d states at the Fermi energy, disrupt indirect exchange interactions mediated by conduction electrons, dramatically reduce the magnetic ordering temperature, and open a pseudo-gap in the majority-spin channel. Here, both experiments and theory show evidence of Kondo-like behavior in the hydride in the absence of an applied magnetic field, whereas increasing the field promotes magnetic ordering and suppresses Kondo-like behavior.

Experimental observation of spin glass state in the highly disordered quaternary Heusler alloy FeRuMnGa

The realization of the spin-glass (SG) state in Heusler alloys is very rare despite the presence of inherent structural and elemental disorder in those compounds. Although a few half- and full-Heusler alloys are known to exhibit the SG state, there is hardly any manifestation of the same in cases of quaternary Heusler compounds. Here we report the observation of a SG state in a highly disordered equiatomic quaternary Heusler compound: FeRuMnGa where the SG state is in between the canonical SG and the cluster glass. Different intricate features of the SG state including nonequilibrium magnetic dynamics at low temperatures in the compound are unveiled through our comprehensive magnetic, heat capacity, and neutron-diffraction studies. Further the structural disorder in the sample is neither conventional A2 - nor B2 -type whereas those two types are commonly observed for Heusler compounds. The presence of disorder also plays a significant role in electron transport properties of the alloy, which is reflected in its exhibition of semimetallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect at low temperatures.

Ground-state degeneracy and complex magnetism of geometrically frustrated Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97

We report a new triangular-lattice intermetallic compound Gd 2 Ir 0.97 Si 2.97 was successfully synthesized as single phase by deliberately introducing vacancies. Theoretical analysis suggests that the ground state is competing with several low-energy spin configurations due to magnetic frustration on a nearly ideal triangular lattice. Despite a number of competing magnetic states, the compound exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order at16K, a long-range ferrimagnetic transition at 6.5 K, and a reentrant cluster-glass transition below T f ~ 3K. The complex magnetism in the compound could be correlated with competing antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic structures predicted theoretically.
