Fixed-point error analysis of Winograd Fourier transform algorithms

The quantization error introduced by the Winograd Fourier transform algorithm (WFTA) when implemented in fixed-point arithmetic is studied and compared with that of the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The effect of ordering the computational modules and the relative contributions of data quantization error and coefficient quantization error are determined. In addition, the quantization error introduced by the Good-Winograd (GW) algorithm, which uses Good's prime-factor decomposition for the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) together with Winograd's short length DFT algorithms, is studied. Error introduced by the WFTA is, in all cases, worse than that of the FFT. In general, the WFTA requires one or two more bits for data representation to give an error similar to that of the FFT. Error introduced by the GW algorithm is approximately the same as that of the FFT.

Evaluation of active control technology for short haul aircraft

An evaluation of the economics of short-haul aircraft designed with active controls technology and low wing-loading to achieve short field performance with good ride quality is presented. Results indicate that for such a system incorporating gust load alleviation and augmented stability the direct operating cost is better than for aircraft without active controls.

Evaluation of advanced lift concepts and fuel conservative short-haul aircraft, volume 1

The performance and economics of a twin-engine augmentor wing airplane were evaluated in two phases. Design aspects of the over-the-wing/internally blown flap hybrid, augmentor wing, and mechanical flap aircraft were investigated for 910 m. field length with parametric extension to other field lengths. Fuel savings achievable by application of advanced lift concepts to short-haul aircraft were evaluated and the effect of different field lengths, cruise requirements, and noise levels on fuel consumption and airplane economics at higher fuel prices were determined. Conclusions and recommendations are presented.

Weight estimates for Quiet/STOL aircraft

Attention is drawn to the dependence of Q/STOL weight estimation relationships on design acoustic level, engine selection, high-lift concept, design criteria such as field lengths, range, speed and payload, aircraft geometry, and design constraints such as vehicle cost and fuel prices. Weight estimate considerations with associated configuration and design details are presented. Typical weight estimating relationships being used in a NASA study contract are also included. Some representative future applications of Q/STOL concepts are visualized as (1) fuel conservative configurations utilizing STOL high-life concepts for obtaining relatively higher wing loadings during cruise, and (2) low-wing loading aircraft configurations with short-range, low-passenger capacity, and low fan-passenger-ratio turbo-fan engines for a future interurban air transportation market.

Radial honeycomb core

Core alleviates many limitations of conventional nacelle construction methods. Radical core, made of metals or nonmetals, is fabricated either by joining nodes and then expanding, or by performing each layer and then joining nodes. Core may also be produced from ribbons or strips with joined nodes or ribbons oriented in longitudinal planes.
