IPPOG: a global network for particle physics outreach and education

We present the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG), a global network dedicated to connecting students, educators, and the general public with the world of particle physics. In this paper, we outline the need to bridge the existing gap between the particle physics community and the wider audience, and we present the solutions that IPPOG has implemented to overcome it through three pillar Activities: the International Masterclasses and the Global Cosmics hands-on activities network, which have engaged together over 200,000 high-school students to date, and the curation of an Outreach Resource Database and web portal.

QuarkNet Center Summer Internship for High School Students – FY2024

The purpose of this CRADA is to provide the contractual vehicle for Fermilab to receive funds from the College of DuPage in support of high school student research working with the Fermilab/University of Chicago QuarkNet Center, beginning with the effective date of this CRADA and continuing through 2024. Local QuarkNet Centers provide professional development programs to high school teachers and high energy physics research opportunities to high school teachers and students who participate in the local programs. The Office of Education and Public Engagement at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) administers a local QuarkNet Center program on behalf of both Fermilab and the University of Chicago.

Leveraging national laboratories to increase Black representation in STEM: recommendations within the Department of Energy

Increasing diversity in STEM disciplines has been a goal at scientific institutions for many decades. Black representation in STEM, however, has remained critically low at all levels (high school, undergraduate, graduate, and professional) for over 40 years, highlighting the need for innovative strategies that promote and retain Black students and professionals in STEM. We refocus efforts on increasing Black representation in STEM by promoting early exposure and continued engagement while leveraging national laboratories—an underutilized resource with immense potential to centralize diversity and inclusion efforts nationally.
