Effects of secondary electrons from heavy primary cosmic rays in a MWPC hodoscope

A multi-wire proportional counter hodoscope, efficient for both primary track recovery and reading out all wires set by secondary electrons, was flown in a balloon flight experiment covering the range of cosmic ray charge from 4 to 28 and kinetic energy T greater than 0.5 GeV/nucleon. Data on the secondary electron effects in the hodoscope is presented for primary nuclei between C and Fe and kinetic energies between 0.6 and 7.0 GeV/nucleon. The total number of affected anodes in the hodoscope is seen to increase linearly with the cosmic ray change, with a slope that depends strongly on energy over this limited primary energy range.

HEAO-A Observatory Description

The High Energy Astronomy Observatory Program is briefly described to introduce guest observers to the HEAO-A mission. Topics discussed include spacecraft subsystems, scientific instrumentation, and the mission operations concept. Scientific participants such as principal investigators and co-investigators are listed.

An X-ray shadowgraph to locate transient high-energy celestial sources

A new technique has been developed to locate strong, transient X-ray sources such as the recently discovered gamma ray bursts. The instrument, termed a shadowgraph, locates sources by detecting the X-ray shadow cast by a large occulting mask pattern on an imaging detector. Angular resolutions of from 2 to 10 arc minutes are obtainable while essentially full sky coverage is maintained. The optimum energy range of operation is between 20 keV and 100 keV. The high efficiency X-ray imaging detectors, which make it possible to locate bursts with intensities down to approximately 10 photons/sq cm sec, are capable of detecting single 20 keV photons with a spatial resolution of approximately 0.2 mm. The detectors consist of an X-ray to optical conversion phosphor, a multistage image intensifier, and a CCD image readout.

Measurements of cosmic ray trajectories with a proportional counter hodoscope

A 50 by 50 cm, 8-layer multiwire proportional counter hodoscope has been developed for performing trajectory measurements in a large geometrical factor cosmic ray experiment. The hodoscope has a nominal position accuracy of 0.5 cm and a 1-deg angular accuracy. Data obtained from a balloon exposure show tracks of heavy cosmic rays are efficiently recovered from the copious triggers due to secondary electrons through the use of two discriminators on each wire. The spatial distribution of counts produced by secondary electrons from the iron group nuclei is compared with calculations of energy deposition from the secondaries.

Measurements of the performance of multiwire proportional chambers

Data are presented that may be useful in formulating engineering specifications and test procedures for the proportional counter hodoscope to be flown as part of the High Energy Cosmic Ray Experiment on the High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO), Mission A. A collection of preliminary data taken in laboratory tests of multiwire counters with an anode wire spacing of 5 mm and cathode gap spacing of 1 cm is presented. The data are from laboratory development models or counters for balloon flights and were selected to illustrate several aspects of proper and improper counter performance. Most of the data were taken from a large proportional counter hodoscope which has an active area of 0.5 by 0.5 m and 104 wires per plane.

A low power X-ray diffractometer for soil analysis in remote locations employing a multiwire proportional counter detector array.

A low power X-ray powder diffraction system suitable for remote mineralogical analysis of lunar, planetary, or asteroid soils has been designed. A one Curie Fe-55 source provides a monochromatic X-ray beam of 5.9 keV. Seeman-Bohlin focusing geometry is employed in the camera, allowing peak detection to proceed simultaneously at all angles and obviating the need for moving parts. The detector system is an array of 500-600 proportional counters with a wire-spacing of 1 mm. An electronics unit comprising preamplifier, postamplifier, window discriminators, and storage flip-flops requiring only 3.5 milliwatts has been designed and tested. Total instrument power is less than 5 W.

Heavy ion passive dosimetry with silver halide single crystals

A method of detecting radiation damage tracks due to heavy particles in large single crystals of the silver halides is described. The tracks, when made visible with a simple electrical apparatus, appear similar to tracks in emulsions. The properties of the crystals, the technique of printing out the tracks, and evidence concerning the threshold energy for registering particles indicates that this method may find application in heavy ion dosimetry. The method has been found to be sensitive to stopping He nuclei and relativistic M group cosmic rays. Some impurities strongly influence the printout of the tracks, and the effects of these impurities are discussed.
