Entropy Generation Across Earth's Bow Shock

Earth's bow shock is a transition layer that causes an irreversible change in the state of plasma that is stationary in time. Theories predict entropy increases across the bow shock but entropy has never been directly measured. Cluster and Double Star plasma experiments measure 3D plasma distributions upstream and downstream of the bow shock that allow calculation of Boltzmann's entropy function H and his famous H-theorem, dH/dt ~ O. We present the first direct measurements of entropy density changes across Earth's bow shock. We will show that this entropy generation may be part of the processes that produce the non-thermal plasma distributions is consistent with a kinetic entropy flux model derived from the collisionless Boltzmann equation, giving strong support that solar wind's total entropy across the bow shock remains unchanged. As far as we know, our results are not explained by any existing shock models and should be of interests to theorists.

Motions of particle microstructures in the magnetopause boundary layer

Particle flux data acquired by the ISEE 1 and 2 spacecraft reveal many of magnitude changes within the magnetopause boundary layer that occur during less than 1/4 s of time. These changes define small-scale particle structure, or microstructures within the region, many of which are apparently inclusions of plasma from adjacent regions. Particle structures resolved by the high time resolution data include groups with periods as short as 0.375 s. An estimate is derived for the motion of the microstructures with respect to an oscillatory inner boundary for four afternoon sector boundary layer crossings by measuring interspacecraft time differences as the features propagate past the satellites. On average the microstructures move toward the tail of the magnetosphere in concert with the wavy large-scale inner boundary. Furthermore, the orientations of the edges of the structures maintain an aspect similar to that of the boundary. These characteristics are expected for magnetohydrodynamic plasma flows that generate vorticity due to velocity shear stresses.

On the modulation of X ray fluxes in thunderstorms

The production of X-ray fluxes in thunderstorms has been attributed to bremsstrahlung. Assuming this, another question arises. How can a thunderstorm modulate the number density of electrons which are sufficiently energetic to produce X-rays? As a partial answer to this question, the effects of typical thunderstorm electric fields on a background population of energetic electrons, such as produced by cosmic ray secondaries and their decays or the decay of airborne radionuclides, are considered. The observed variation of X-ray flux is shown to be accounted for by a simple model involving typical electric field strengths. A necessary background electron number density is found from the model and is determined to be more than 2 orders of magnitude higher than that available from radon decay and a factor of 8 higher than that available from cosmic ray secondaries. The ionization enhancement due to energetic electrons and X-rays is discussed.

Chaotic structures of nonlinear magnetic fields. I - Theory. II - Numerical results

A study of the evolutionary properties of nonlinear magnetic fields in flowing MHD plasmas is presented to illustrate that nonlinear magnetic fields may involve chaotic dynamics. It is shown how a suitable transformation of the coupled equations leads to Duffing's form, suggesting that the behavior of the general solution can also be chaotic. Numerical solutions of the nonlinear magnetic field equations that have been cast in the form of Duffing's equation are presented.

Focusing educational initiatives

The United States will soon be facing a critical shortage of aerospace scientists and engineers. To address this problem, Space Grant Colleges can assist in focusing interest in existing educational initiatives and in creating new educational opportunities, particularly for women and underrepresented minorities.
