PV-BESS DC-Series Integration for Regulated DC Systems

DC-series integration introduces a novel approach to seamlessly integrate a solar photovoltaic (PV) array and a battery energy storage (BES) in series. This system, referred to as the PV-integrated battery energy storage system—dc series (PVBESS-DCS), simplifies integration and enhances power density by leveraging the inherent voltage-source characteristics of batteries and adopting the concept of partial power processing. However, addressing voltage variations of a PV array and a BES under different operational conditions remains a challenge to apply the PVBESS-DCS to a regulated dc system, where the dc-bus voltage is fixed. This article proposes a PVBESS-DCS solution tailored for regulated dc systems. Within this framework, we present a controllable series voltage source compensating for the voltage differences between the PV and BES sources and the dc bus. Thus, the system can perform PV maximum power point tracking and curtailment control while charging and discharging BES and connected to a regulated dc bus. Additionally, we present a single-stage multiport partial power processing dc–dc converter designed for the proposed PVBESS-DCS. It utilizes a triple active bridge dc–dc converter topology. Finally, this article presents operating principles, control strategies, simulation results, and experimental findings of the proposed PVBESS-DCS for regulated dc systems.

A Half-Bridge On-State Voltage Sensor for In-Situ Measurements

Current prognostics for life expectancy of power semiconductors utilize off-line measurements of the on-state resistance. Presented is a half-bridge (HB) on-state voltage (VON) sensor capable of being utilized for in-situ measurements enabling continuous and real-time monitoring of the on-state resistance. The design provides a single VON measurement output that contains independent VON information of both high and low side devices in a HB leg. The measurement output is referenced from the middle point of the HB and combines the two complementary VON sensing outputs. This system reduces the number of components, required number of analog signal processing circuits, and ADC channels for in-situ health monitoring of a power electronics system. These reductions will facilitate integration of the VON sensor with the gate driver board and achieve low system profile. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed VON measurements while switching with inductive and resistive loads.

Systems and methods for advanced grid integration of distributed generators and energy resources

A circuit for a smart photovoltaic (PV) inverter system and the smart PV inverter system are described. The circuit includes one or more strings coupled to an electrical load. Each of the one or more strings further includes one or more string members coupled in series, where each of the one or more string members comprises a voltage source and an inverter. The circuit also includes a controller to receive an output from an operator controller and control the strings, where the controller is configured to control the strings by providing a function command to a first string member of each of the one or more strings based on the output from the operator controller. The voltage source may also receive an output from an energy output device. Further, the inverter may be configured to convert the output of energy output device into an energy source of electrical load.
