Multiple Charge Density Waves and Superconductivity Nucleation at Antiphase Domain Walls in the Nematic Pnictide Ba 1– x Sr x Ni 2 As 2

How superconductivity interacts with charge or nematic order is one of the great unresolved issues at the center of research in quantum materials. Ba 1– x Sr x Ni 2 As 2 (BSNA) is a charge ordered pnictide superconductor recently shown to exhibit a sixfold enhancement of superconductivity due to nematic fluctuations near a quantum phase transition (at $x_c$ = 0.7). The superconductivity is, however, anomalous, with the resistive transition for $0.4 < x < x_c$ occurring at a higher temperature than the specific heat anomaly. Here, using x-ray scattering, we discovered a new charge density wave (CDW) in BSNA in this composition range. The CDWis commensurate with a period of two lattice parameters, and is distinct from the two CDWs previously reported in this material. We argue that the anomalous transport behavior arises from heterogeneous superconductivity nucleating at antiphase domain walls in this CDW. We also present new data on the incommensurate CDW, previously identified as being unidirectional, showing that it is a rotationally symmetric “4$\textit{Q}$” state with $C_4$ symmetry. Our study establishes BSNA as a rare material containing three distinct CDWs, and an exciting test bed for studying coupling between CDW, nematic, and SC orders.

Bulk transport paths through defects in floating zone and Al flux grown SmB 6

We investigate the roles of disorder on low-temperature transport in SmB 6 crystals grown by both the Al flux and floating zone methods. We used the inverted resistance method with Corbino geometry to investigate whether low-temperature variations in the standard resistance plateau arise from a surface or a bulk channel in floating zone samples. The results show significant sample-dependent residual bulk conduction, in contrast to smaller amounts of residual bulk conduction previously observed in Al flux grown samples with Sm vacancies. In this work, we consider hopping in an activated impurity band as a possible source for the observed bulk conduction, but it is unlikely that the large residual bulk conduction seen in floating zone samples is solely due to Sm vacancies. We therefore propose that one-dimensional defects, or dislocations, contribute as well. Using chemical etching, we find evidence for dislocations in both flux and floating zone samples, with higher dislocation density in floating zone samples than in Al flux grown samples. In addition to the possibility of transport through one-dimensional dislocations, we also discuss our results in the context of recent theoretical models of SmB 6 .

Crystalline symmetry-protected non-trivial topology in prototype compound BaAl 4

The BaAl 4 prototype crystal structure is the most populous of all structure types, and is the building block for a diverse set of sub-structures including the famous ThCr 2 Si 2 family that hosts high-temperature superconductivity and numerous magnetic and strongly correlated electron systems. The MA 4 family of materials (M = Sr, Ba, Eu; A = Al, Ga, In) themselves present an intriguing set of ground states including charge and spin orders, but have largely been considered as uninteresting metals. We predict the exemplary compound BaAl 4 to harbor a three-dimensional Dirac spectrum with non-trivial topology and possible nodal lines crossing the Brillouin zone, wherein one pair of semi-Dirac points with linear dispersion along the k z direction and quadratic dispersion along the k x / k y direction resides on the rotational axis with C 4 v point group symmetry. An extremely large, unsaturating positive magnetoresistance in BaAl 4 despite an uncompensated band structure is revealed, and quantum oscillations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements confirm the predicted multiband semimetal structure with pockets of Dirac holes and a Van Hove singularity (VHS) remarkably consistent with the theoretical prediction. We thus present BaAl 4 as a topological semimetal, casting its prototype status into a role as a building block for a vast array of topological materials.

Optical signatures of multifold fermions in the chiral topological semimetal CoSi

Significance We present a comprehensive combined experimental and theoretical study of optical conductivity in the chiral topological semimetal CoSi based on the development of high-quality crystals. We reveal the presence and the energy range of various exotic multifold quasiparticles in the optical responses and provide experimental evidence for the realization of fourfold spin-3/2 fermions, which were not directly observed previously. Our work is critical to interpreting future optical and transport responses of multifold fermion materials. We believe the methods used in this work will not only stimulate future research in this class of materials but will also provide a strategy for addressing optical signatures of chiral topological fermions in solids.

Quantum oscillations from networked topological interfaces in a Weyl semimetal

Layered transition metal chalcogenides are promising hosts of electronic Weyl nodes and topological superconductivity. MoTe 2 is a striking example that harbors both noncentrosymmetric T d and centrosymmetric T’ phases, both of which have been identified as topologically nontrivial. Applied pressure tunes the structural transition separating these phases to zero temperature, stabilizing a mixed T d –T’ matrix that entails a network of interfaces between the two nontrivial topological phases. Here, we show that this critical pressure range is characterized by distinct coherent quantum oscillations, indicating that the difference in topology between topologically nonvtrivial T d and T’ phases gives rise to an emergent electronic structure: a network of topological interfaces. A rare combination of topologically nontrivial electronic structures and locked-in transformation barriers leads to this counterintuitive situation, wherein quantum oscillations can be observed in a structurally inhomogeneous material. These results further open the possibility of stabilizing multiple topological phases coexisting with superconductivity.

Enhancement and reentrance of spin triplet superconductivity in UTe 2 under pressure

Spin triplet superconductivity in the Kondo lattice UTe 2 appears to be associated with spin fluctuations originating from incipient ferromagnetic order. Here we show clear evidence of twofold enhancement of superconductivity under pressure, which discontinuously transitions to magnetic order, likely of ferromagnetic nature, at higher pressures. The application of a magnetic field tunes the system back across a first-order phase boundary. Straddling this phase boundary, we find another example of reentrant superconductivity in UTe 2 . As the superconductivity and magnetism exist on two opposite sides of the first-order phase boundary, our results in this work indicate other microscopic mechanisms may be playing a role in stabilizing spin triplet superconductivity in addition to spin fluctuations associated with magnetism.
