Federal Energy Management 101: Track 7, Session 1

Federal Energy Management 101: What are common building systems that use energy? This session will cover the basics of HVAC, Lighting, and Building Envelope and discuss how much energy each system tends to use within facilities - and how that changes across building types. Additionally, this session will cover identifying energy conservation measures (ECMs) and the process in which they are identified, funded, implemented, and savings are verified.

Decarbonization Considerations: Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings [Slides]

The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) is helping federal agencies understand how to meet decarbonization goals with grid interactive efficient buildings (GEB). This training will provide attendees with an introduction to GEB, how to work with utilities, and opportunities for federal sites.

Demonstration and Evaluation of a Non-Invasive, Low-Cost, Strap-On Sensor for Natural Gas Meters

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is interested in installing internet-connected, gas submeters to better understand gas consumption in its portfolio of buildings. The GSA in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory conducted a demonstration to assess a specific submeter technology. This technology was implemented at two GSA separate facilities located in Dallas, Texas. This demonstration evaluated hardware and software installations and integrations, data integrity and accuracy, and included an economic analysis. This demonstration evaluated a gas submeter technology provided by the vendor Vata Verks, who produces a non-invasive strap-on submeter. The company was founded with a mission to conserve water (and eventually gas) cheaply and simply, as explained on its website. The product intends to streamline submeter deployments for gas and water by eliminating most hardware costs while allowing for easy integration of submetered data into other systems such as the Building Automation System and removing tenant and building disruption This demonstration evaluated the product features when used on a gas utility meter.

Field Validation of a Building Operating System Platform

The U.S General Services Administration's (GSA's) Green Proving Ground program, in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. completed a large pilot study of an Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS) with Automated System Optimization (ASO). Four test bed facilities, each with different building characteristics and systems, were chosen for the implementation of cloud-based EMIS with ASO. Depending on functionality, this tool can be extremely effective in energy management and energy optimization in buildings. The capabilities evaluated in the pilot ranged from energy savings and energy consumption predictions to evaluations of user acceptance, operability, and ease of installation. This report presents the methodology, lessons learned and best practices, and deployment recommendations for the GSA's portfolio of commercial office space, comprising more than 8,500 properties.
