2024 Photovoltaic Inverter Reliability Workshop Summary Report & Proceedings

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) organized the 2024 Photovoltaic Inverter Reliability Workshop on April 11-12, 2024, hosted at NREL's South Table Mountain campus in Golden, Colorado. The workshop was organized around seven key topics, including the present state of inverter reliability; solutions for reliability challenges; life cycle cost and ownership issues; testing, standards, performance, and reliability metrics; data reporting, analytics, and sharing; and the future of PV inverter reliability research. Participants included inverter manufacturers, national laboratory researchers, academics, independent testing laboratories, and more. Over the course of the two-day workshop, attendees arrived at several key priorities and conclusions. This report summarizes these conclusions and then collects presentations from the workshop into a record of the workshop's proceedings.

Illuminating Agrivoltaics at NREL

In this talk, we will provide an overview of the INSPIREing work being done in the agrivoltaics field at NREL. We will focus on the modeling aspects of agrivoltaics, discussing key assumptions and metrics that guide research, and main open concerns from the community. We will innovative solutions implement at NREL for modeling, and ongoing experiments for shading and irradiance modeling. We will conclude with a look at the future steps necessary to advance this particular area of agrivoltaics.

Sustainability pathways for perovskite photovoltaics

Solar energy is the fastest-growing source of electricity generation globally. As deployment increases, photovoltaic (PV) panels need to be produced sustainably. Therefore, the resource utilization rate and the rate at which those resources become available in the environment must be in equilibrium while maintaining the well-being of people and nature. Metal halide perovskite (MHP) semiconductors could revolutionize PV technology due to high efficiency, readily available/accessible materials and low-cost production. Here we outline how MHP-PV panels could scale a sustainable supply chain while appreciably contributing to a global renewable energy transition. Further, we evaluate the critical material concerns, embodied energy, carbon impacts and circular supply chain processes of MHP-PVs. The research community is in an influential position to prioritize research efforts in reliability, recycling and remanufacturing to make MHP-PVs one of the most sustainable energy sources on the market.

Close roof-mounted system temperature estimation for compliance to IEC TS 63126

When photovoltaic (PV) modules are installed on rooftops, the module temperature depends primarily on the geographic location and the mounting configuration. If the mounting structure does not provide sufficient airflow in a hot environment, the 98th percentile temperature will exceed 70°C, which according to IEC TS 63126 ED. 1, requires higher levels of thermal stability testing. However, there is no clear way to determine the temperature level needed for a particular location and system design. Here, in this work, we identify a relationship between the module standoff to the rooftop and the module temperature and propose methods to describe a minimum standoff for typical PV modules in a simple mounting configuration installed in a given location. For more complex system designs, we show how to determine an equivalent “effective standoff” that can be applied to generic calculations. Lastly, we show measurements and calculations from several systems to demonstrate how this method could work.
