Quantum disordered ground state in the triangular-lattice magnet NaRuO 2

It has long been hoped that spin liquid states might be observed in materials that realize the triangular lattice Hubbard model. However, weak spin-orbit coupling and other small perturbations often induce conventional spin freezing or magnetic ordering. Sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling, however, can renormalize the electronic wave function and induce anisotropic exchange interactions that promote magnetic frustration. Here we show that the cooperative interplay of spin-orbit coupling and correlation effects in the triangular lattice magnet NaRuO 2 produces an inherently fluctuating magnetic ground state. Despite the presence of a charge gap, we find that low-temperature spin excitations generate a metal-like term in the specific heat and a continuum of excitations in neutron scattering, reminiscent of spin liquid states previously found in triangular lattice organic magnets. Further cooling produces a crossover into a different, highly disordered, spin state whose dynamic spin autocorrelation function reflects persistent fluctuations. Furthermore, these findings establish NaRuO 2 as a cousin to organic, Heisenberg spin liquid compounds with a low-temperature crossover in quantum disorder.

Order-disorder charge density wave instability in the kagome metal (Cs,Rb)V 3 Sb 5

The origin of the charge density wave phases in the kagome metal compound AV 3 Sb 5 is still under great scrutiny. Here, we combine diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering to identify a 3-dimensional precursor of the charge order at the L point that condenses into a CDW through a first order phase transition. The quasi-elastic critical scattering indicates that the dominant contribution to the diffuse precursor is the elastic central peak without phonon softening. However, the inelastic spectra show a small broadening of the Einstein-type phonon mode on approaching T CDW . Our results point to the situation where the Fermi surface instability at the L point is of order-disorder type with critical growth of quasi-static domains. The experimental data indicate that the CDW consists on an alternating Star of David and trihexagonal distortions and its dynamics goes beyond the classical weak-coupling scenario and is discussed within strong-electron phonon coupling and non-adiabatic models.

Charge order landscape and competition with superconductivity in kagome metals

In the kagome metals AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs), three-dimensional charge order is the primary instability that sets the stage for other collective orders to emerge, including unidirectional stripe order, orbital flux order, electronic nematicity and superconductivity. In this report we use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to determine the microscopic structure of three-dimensional charge order in AV 3 Sb 5 and its interplay with superconductivity. Our approach is based on identifying an unusual splitting of kagome bands induced by three-dimensional charge order, which provides a sensitive way to refine the spatial charge patterns in neighbouring kagome planes. Here we found a marked dependence of the three-dimensional charge order structure on composition and doping. The observed difference between CsV 3 Sb 5 and the other compounds potentially underpins the double-dome superconductivity in CsV 3 (Sb,Sn) 5 and the suppression of T c in KV 3 Sb 5 and RbV 3 Sb 5 . Our results provide fresh insights into the rich phase diagram of AV 3 Sb 5 .

Defect control in the Heisenberg-Kitaev candidate material NaRuO 2

The combination of geometric frustration, extended hopping, spin-orbit coupling, and a disordered magnetic ground state make NaRuO 2 an attractive Heisenberg-Kitaev candidate material. Historically, NaRuO 2 has been a challenging material to produce, even in polycrystalline form. Here we present synthetic efforts that identify a propensity for Na Ru defects to form in NaRuO 2 , revealing a full solid-solution between NaRuO 2 and disordered Na 2 RuO 3 . We report the synthesis of alloys along the Na 3+x Ru 3–x O 6 solid solution and characterize changes in the bulk magnetization and electron transport as a function of Na loading. Furthermore, our results highlight the importance of stoichiometry control in NaRuO 2 when investigating and interpreting this material’s physical properties.

The kagomé metals RbTi 3 Bi 5 and CsTi 3 Bi 5

Abstract The kagomé metals RbTi 3 Bi 5 and CsTi 3 Bi 5 were synthesized both as polycrystalline powders by heating the elements in an argon atmosphere and as single crystals grown using a self-flux method. The compounds crystallize in the hexagonal crystal system isotypically to KV 3 Sb 5 ( P 6/ mmm , Z = 1, CsTi 3 Bi 5 : a = 5.7873(1), c = 9.2062(1) Å; RbTi 3 Bi 5 : a = 5.773(1), c = 9.065(1) Å). The titanium atoms form a kagomé net with bismuth atoms in the hexagons as well as above and below the triangles. The alkali metal atoms are coordinated by 12 bismuth atoms and form AlB 2 -like slabs between the kagomé layers. Magnetic susceptibility measurements with CsTi 3 Bi 5 and RbTi 3 Bi 5 single crystals reveal Pauli-paramagnetism and traces of superconductivity caused by CsBi 2 /RbBi 2 impurities. Magnetotransport measurements reveal conventional Fermi liquid behavior and quantum oscillations indicative of a single dominant orbit at low temperature. DFT calculations show the characteristic metallic kagomé band structure similar to that of CsV 3 Sb 5 with reduced band filling. A symmetry analysis of the band structure does not reveal an obvious and unique signature of a nontrivial topology.

Electronic and structural properties of RbCe X 2 ( X 2 : O 2 , S 2 , SeS, Se 2 , TeSe, Te 2 )

We report triangular lattice delafossite compounds built from magnetic lanthanide ions are a topic of recent interest due to their frustrated magnetism and realization of quantum disordered magnetic ground states. Here we report the evolution of the structure and electronic ground states of RbCeX 2 compounds, built from a triangular lattice of Ce 3+ ions, upon varying their anion character (X 2 =O 2 , S 2 , SeS, Se 2 , TeSe, Te 2 ). This includes the discovery of a new member of this series, RbCeO 2 , that potentially realizes a quantum disordered ground state analogous to NaYbO 2 . Magnetization and susceptibility measurements reveal that all compounds manifest mean-field antiferromagnetic interactions and, with the exception of the oxide, possess signatures of magnetic correlations onset below 1 K. The crystalline electric field level scheme is explored via neutron scattering and ab initio calculations in order to model the intramultiplet splitting of the J=5/2 multiplet. In addition to the two excited doublets expected within the J=5/2 manifold, we observe one extra local mode present across the sample series. This added mode shifts downward in energy with increasing anion mass and decreasing crystal field strength, suggesting a long-lived anomalous mode endemic to anion motion about the Ce3 + sites.

Tuning charge density wave order and superconductivity in the kagome metals KV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x and RbV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x

The family of AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) kagome metals exhibits charge density wave (CDW) order, proposed to be chiral, followed by a lower temperature superconducting state. Recent studies have proposed the importance of band structure saddle points proximal to the Fermi energy in governing these two transitions. Here we show the effects of hole doping achieved via chemical substitution of Sn for Sb on the CDW and superconducting states in both KV 3 Sb 5 and RbV 3 Sb 5 and generate a phase diagram. Furthermore, hole doping lifts the Γ pocket and van Hove singularities toward E F causing the superconducting T C in both systems to increase to about 4.5 K, while rapidly suppressing the CDW state.

Electronic states dressed by an out-of-plane supermodulation in the quasi-two-dimensional kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5

CsV 3 Sb 5 has attracted much recent attention as the first quasi-two-dimensional (2D) kagome superconductor. While the kagome layers are 2D in nature, increasing evidence has pointed to the importance of out-of-plane correlation in this material. However, it remains unclear whether such correlation can change the fundamental electronic structure of the quasi-2D system. Here, we reveal this missing piece of information, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, complemented by scanning tunneling microscope measurements. The three-dimensional electronic structures in the high-temperature state are revealed, which agree well with density-functional theory calculations. Electron energy bands are observed in the low-temperature state that exhibit additional periodicities along the out-of-plane momentum. Furthermore, these results reveal a direct response to the out-of-plane electronic supermodulation in the single-particle spectral function of CsV 3 Sb 5 , thus establishing an electronic platform to examine emergent phenomena beyond 2D limit in kagome superconductors.

Fermi level tuning and double-dome superconductivity in the kagome metal CsV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x

The recently reported AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K , Rb, Cs) family of kagome metals are candidates for unconventional superconductivity and chiral charge density wave (CDW) order; both potentially arise from nested saddle points in their band structures close to the Fermi energy. Here, we use chemical substitution to introduce holes into CsV 3 Sb 5 and unveil an unconventional coupling of the CDW and superconducting states. Specifically, we generate a phase diagram for CsV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x that illustrates the impact of hole doping the system and lifting the nearest van Hove singularity toward and above E F . Superconductivity exhibits a nonmonotonic evolution with the introduction of holes, resulting in two “domes” peaked at 3.6 and 4.1 K and the rapid suppression of three-dimensional CDW order. Further, the evolution of CDW and superconducting order is compared with the evolution of the electronic band structure of CsV 3 Sb 5 – x Sn x , where the complete suppression of superconductivity seemingly coincides with an electronlike band comprised of Sb p z orbitals pushed above E F .

Twofold van Hove singularity and origin of charge order in topological kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5

The layered vanadium antimonides AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) are a recently discovered family of topological kagome metals that exhibit a range of strongly correlated electronic phases including charge order and superconductivity. However, it is not yet understood how the distinctive electronic structure of the kagome lattice is linked to the observed many-body phenomena. Here we combine angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory to reveal multiple kagome-derived van Hove singularities (vHS) coexisting near the Fermi level of CsV 3 Sb 5 and analyse their contribution to electronic symmetry breaking. The vHS are characterized by two distinct sublattice flavours (p-type and m-type), which originate, respectively, from their pure and mixed sublattice characters. These twofold vHS flavours of the kagome lattice critically determine the pairing symmetry and unconventional ground states emerging in the AV 3 Sb 5 series. We establish that, among the multiple vHS in CsV 3 Sb 5 , the m-type vHS of the d xz /d yz kagome band and the p-type vHS of the d xy /d x2–y2 kagome band are located very close to the Fermi level, setting the stage for electronic symmetry breaking. The former band is characterized by pronounced Fermi surface nesting, while the latter exhibits a higher-order vHS. Furthermore, our work reveals the essential role of kagome-derived vHS for the collective phenomena realized in the AV 3 Sb 5 family.

Realizing Kagome Band Structure in Two-Dimensional Kagome Surface States of RV 6 Sn 6 (R = Gd, Ho)

Here, we report angle resolved photoemission experiments on a newly discovered family of kagome metals RV 6 Sn 6 (R = Gd, Ho). Intrinsic bulk states and surface states of the vanadium kagome layer are differentiated from those of other atomic sublattices by the real-space resolution of the measurements with a small beam spot. Characteristic Dirac cone, saddle point, and flat bands of the kagome lattice are observed. Our results establish the two-dimensional (2D) kagome surface states as a new platform to investigate the intrinsic kagome physics.

Controlling thermoelectric transport via native defects in the diamond-like semiconductors Cu 2 HgGeTe 4 and Hg 2 GeTe 4

Diamond like semiconductors (DLS) have emerged as candidates for thermoelectric energy conversion. Towards understanding and optimizing performance, we present a comprehensive investigation of the electronic properties of two DLS phases, quaternary Cu 2 HgGeTe 4 and related ordered vacancy compound Hg 2 GeTe 4 , including thermodynamic stability, defect chemistry, and transport properties. To establish the thermodynamic link between the related but distinct phases, the stability region for both is visualized in chemical potential space. In spite of their similar structure and bonding, we show that the two materials exhibit reciprocal behaviors for dopability. Cu 2 HgGeTe 4 is degenerately p-type in all environments despite its wide stability region, due to the presence of low-energy acceptor defects V Cu and Cu Hg and is resistant to extrinsic n-type doping. Meanwhile Hg 2 GeTe 4 has a narrow stability region and intrinsic behavior due to the relatively high formation energy of native defects, but presents an opportunity for bi-polar doping. While these two compounds have similar structure, bonding, and chemical constituents, the reciprocal nature of their dopability emerges from significant differences in band edge positions. A Brouwer band diagram approach is utilized to visualize the role of native defects on carrier concentrations, dopability, and transport properties. Here this study elucidates the doping asymmetry between two solid-solution forming DLS phases Cu 2 HgGeTe 4 and Hg 2 GeTe 4 by revealing the defect chemistry of each compound, and suggests design strategies for defect engineering of DLS phases.

Intrinsic nature of chiral charge order in the kagome superconductor Rb V 3 Sb 5

Superconductors with kagome lattices have been identified for over 40 years, with a superconducting transition temperature T c up to 7 K. Recently, certain kagome superconductors have been found to exhibit an exotic charge order, which intertwines with superconductivity and persists to a temperature being one order of magnitude higher than T c . Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study the charge order in kagome superconductor Rb V 3 Sb 5 . We observe both a 2×2 chiral charge order and nematic surface superlattices (predominantly 1×4). We find that the 2×2 charge order exhibits intrinsic chirality with magnetic field tunability. Defects can scatter electrons to introduce standing waves, which couple with the charge order to cause extrinsic effects. While the chiral charge order resembles that discovered in KV 3 Sb 5 , it further interacts with the nematic surface superlattices that are absent in KV 3 Sb 5 but exist in CsV 3 Sb 5 .

Unconventional chiral charge order in kagome superconductor KV 3 Sb 5

Intertwining quantum order and non-trivial topology is at the frontier of condensed matter physics. A charge-density-wave-like order with orbital currents has been proposed for achieving the quantum anomalous Hall effect in topological materials and for the hidden phase in cuprate high-temperature superconductors. However, the experimental realization of such an order is challenging. Here we use high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy to discover an unconventional chiral charge order in a kagome material, KV 3 Sb 5 , with both a topological band structure and a superconducting ground state. Through both topography and spectroscopic imaging, we observe a robust 2 × 2 superlattice. Spectroscopically, an energy gap opens at the Fermi level, across which the 2 × 2 charge modulation exhibits an intensity reversal in real space, signalling charge ordering. At the impurity-pinning-free region, the strength of intrinsic charge modulations further exhibits chiral anisotropy with unusual magnetic field response. Therefore theoretical analysis of our experiments suggests a tantalizing unconventional chiral charge density wave in the frustrated kagome lattice, which can not only lead to a large anomalous Hall effect with orbital magnetism, but also be a precursor of unconventional superconductivity.

Understanding Cu incorporation in the Cu 2x Hg 2-x GeTe 4 structure using resonant x-ray diffraction

The ability to control carrier concentration based on the extent of Cu solubility in the Cu 2x Hg 2-x GeTe 4 alloy compound (where 0 ≤ x ≤ 1) makes Cu 2x Hg 2-x GeTe 4 an interesting case study in the field of thermoelectrics. While Cu clearly plays a role in this process, it is unknown exactly how Cu incorporates into the Cu 2x Hg 2-x GeTe 4 crystal structure and how this affects the carrier concentration. In this work, we use a combination of resonant energy x-ray diffraction (REXD) experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the nature of Cu incorporation into the Cu 2x Hg 2-x GeTe 4 structure. REXD across the Cu k edge facilitates the characterization of Cu incorporation in the Cu 2x Hg 2-x GeTe 4 alloy and enables direct quantification of antisite defects. Here, we find that Cu substitutes for Hg at a 2:1 ratio, wherein Cu annihilates a vacancy and swaps with a Hg atom. DFT calculations confirm this result and further indicate that the incorporation of Cu occurs preferentially on one of the z = 1/4 or z = 3/4 planes before filling the other plane. Furthermore, the amount of Cu Hg antisite defects quantified by REXD was found to be directly proportional to the experimentally measured hole concentration, indicating that the Cu Hg defects are the driving force for tuning carrier concentration in the Cu 2x Hg 2-x GeTe 4 alloy. The link uncovered here between crystal structure, or more specifically antisite defects, and carrier concentration can be extended to similar cation-disordered material systems and will aid the development of improved thermoelectric and other functional materials through defect engineering.
