Single-Axis Acoustic Levitator With Rotation Control

Rotation-control equipment simplified. Acoustic levitator with rotation control handles liquid and solid specimens as dense as steel in both low gravity and normal Earth gravity. Levitator is single-axis type.

Fourth-order acoustic torque in intense sound fields

The observation of a fourth-order acoustic torque in intense sound fields is reported. The torque was determined by measuring the acoustically induced angular deflection of a polished cylinder suspended by a torsion fiber. This torque was measured in a sound field of amplitude greater than that in which first-order acoustic torque has been observed.

Onset phenomena in superfluid helium

Onset phenomena in superfluid helium have been studied by measuring the rotational decay constant of a levitated, superconducting niobium sphere coated with an unsaturated superfluid film. The novel features of onset that were observed are discussed. Previous observations of a two-layer-thick solid phase of helium underlying the film have been confirmed.

Temperature dependence of the accommodation coefficient of liquid-helium film.

We have determined the accommodation coefficient, gamma, of a helium film from 1.15 to 4 K by measuring the time constant of a rotating superconducting Nb sphere levitated in vapor and covered with a saturated helium film. The conventional assumption of the phenomenological theory of superfluidity, that the order parameter psi vanishes at the free surface of helium II, implies that gamma, is unity and independent of temperature. We find that gamma, is nearly unity above the lambda point, suffers an abrupt drop close to T-lambda, and gradually levels off to the value of about 0.8 at lower temperatures.
