Pressure Modulator Radiometer (PMR) tests

The pressure modulator technique was evaluated for monitoring pollutant gases in the Earth's atmosphere of altitude levels corresponding to the mid and lower troposphere. Using an experimental set up and a 110 cm sample cell, pressure modulator output signals resulting from a range of gas concentrations in the sample cell were examined. Then a 20 cm sample cell was modified so that trace gas properties in the atmosphere could be simulated in the laboratory. These gas properties were measured using an infrared sensor.

Laboratory simulation of tropospheric pollution sensing with a pressure modulator radiometer /PMR/

The optical properties of carbon monoxide gas uniformly distributed in the atmosphere have been simulated in a 20.48 cm long cell in the laboratory. The altitude of the peak of the weighting function for several concentrations was found using a Pressure Modulator Radiometer (PMR). The effect of a fluctuating background radiance and gaseous nitrous oxide on the carbon monoxide signals were examined.

Electromagnetic free suspension system for space manufacturing. Volume 1: Technology department

The technology developed in defining a facility to be used on the Skylab mission for electromagnetic suspension of small, molten spheres in the weightless space environment is described. The technologies discussed include: four-coil optimization, four-coil versus six-coil configuration comparison, four-coil position servocontrol, four-coil breadboard, position sensing and servosystem, two-color pyrometer, and specimen toration mode analysis.

Multispectral discrimination of possible Martian surface constituents.

In the 1970s attempts will be made to soft-land scientific instruments on the surface of Mars. The question of the employment of several spectral bands to improve discrimination is investigated. The studies conducted are concerned with the development of a technique for selecting color bands for a lander imaging system. Other study objects include the investigation of certain solid state detectors and the determination of the feasibility of minimizing the total number of telemetry bits from the lander by various means.
