Observation of Fast Current Redistribution in an Imploding Plasma Column

Spectroscopic measurements of the magnetic field evolution in a Z-pinch throughout stagnation and with particularly high spatial resolution reveal a sudden current redistribution from the stagnating plasma (SP) to a low-density plasma (LDP) at larger radii, while the SP continues to implode. Based on the plasma parameters it is shown that the current is transferred to an increasing-conductance LDP outside the stagnation, a process likely to be induced by the large impedance of the SP. In conclusion, since an LDP often exists around imploding plasmas and in various pulsed-power systems, such a fast current redistribution may dramatically affect the behavior and achievable parameters in these systems.

Partial-ionization deconfinement effect in magnetized plasma

In partially ionized plasma, where ions can be in different ionization states, each charge state can be described as a different fluid for the purpose of multi-ion collisional transport. In the case of two charge states, transport pushes plasma toward equilibrium, which is found to be a combination of local charge-state equilibrium and generalized pinch relations between ion fluids representing different charge states. Combined, these conditions lead to a dramatic deconfinement of ions. This deconfinement happens on the timescale similar but not identical to the multi-ion cross-field transport timescale, as opposed to electron–ion transport timescale in fully ionized plasma. Deconfinement occurs because local charge-state equilibration enforces the disparity in diamagnetic drift velocities of ion fluid components, which in turn leads to the cross-field transport due to ion–ion friction.

Fueling limits in a cylindrical viscosity-limited reactor

Recently, a method to achieve a “natural hot-ion mode” was suggested by utilizing ion viscous heating in a rotating plasma with a fixed boundary. We explore the steady-state solution to the Braginskii equations and find the parameter regime in which a significant temperature difference between ions and electrons can be sustained in a driven steady state. Here, the threshold for this effect occurs at ρ i ≳ 0.1R. An analytic, leading order low flow solution is obtained, and a numerical, moderate Mach number M ≲ 2 is investigated. The limitation is found to be at moderate Mach numbers.

Temperature screening and cross-field impurity accumulation from a thermodynamic perspective

In a variety of different systems, high-Z ion species show a marked tendency to accumulate in regions of high plasma density. It has previously been suggested that the apparent universality of this behavior could be explained thermodynamically, in terms of the maximum-entropy state attainable when the system must obey an ambipolarity condition. Furthermore, the previous treatment did not allow for the possibility of temperature gradients. Here, tools from non-equilibrium (Onsager) thermodynamics are used to show that ambipolarity continues to play a key role in producing this behavior in the presence of temperature gradients, and to recover well-known temperature screening effects that appear in these cases.

Self-Generated Plasma Rotation in a Z-Pinch Implosion with Preembedded Axial Magnetic Field

Using detailed spectroscopic measurements, highly resolved in both time and space, a self-generated plasma rotation is demonstrated using a cylindrical implosion with a preembedded axial magnetic field (B z0 ). The rotation direction is found to depend on the direction of B z0 and its velocity is found comparable to the peak implosion velocity, considerably affecting the force and energy balance throughout the implosion. Moreover, the evolution of the rotation is consistent with magnetic flux surface isorotation, a novel observation in a Z pinch, which is a prototypical time dependent system.

Finite-difference multiple fluid solution for source-driven rotation in highly magnetized linear plasma device

The rotation profile of a magnetized plasma cylinder composed of multiple fluids is investigated analytically, expanding on previous results. The analytic steady-state solution is used as a benchmark for a time-dependent multiple-fluid finite-difference code, MITNS: Multiple-Ion Transport Numerical Solver. Magnetic field evolution is taken into account, both analytically and numerically. Its details are shown to be of importance when particles are allowed out of the domain. MITNS reproduces the asymptotic expansion results for a small parameter $δ<<<1$. For $\sqrt{m_elm_i} ~ δ << 1$ , a slightly different regime, dominated by viscosity-induced transport of ions, is found numerically and analytically. Finally, this verification supports the use of this code for more complex time-dependent calculations in the future. Additionally, we derive the angular velocity profile of each species due to radial particle and charge fluxes of various strengths.
