Beyond the atmosphere: Early years of space science

From the rocket measurements of the upper atmosphere and Sun that began in 1946, space science gradually emerged as a new field of scientific activity. The course of the United State space program is viewed in an historical context. Major emphasis is on NASA and its programs. The funding, staffing, organization, and priorities of the space program were reviewed.

Introductory remarks - The Apollo 14 mission.

Description of the Apollo 14 mission within the general context of the entire Apollo program. In the Apollo 14 mission, which ended successfully on Feb. 9, 1971, more time was spent on extravehicular activities than in previous missions. In addition, enlarged propellant tanks permitted a larger payload, and some 42 kilograms of samples were brought back.

Payload impact of space shuttle and tug

The advantages offered by space shuttle and tug for space operations are summarized. Economical transportation to a space station and operations in orbit; frequent sorties, with flexible scheduling, for experiment missions; and an economical and flexible replacement for conventional launchers are discussed. These advantages include many potential benefits for payload design, construction, and use.
