C-band measurement of radar backscatter from the ocean surface during SWADE

A preliminary analysis of backscatter measurements collected during the joint NASA/ONR Surface Wave Dynamics Experiment (SWADE) by a C-band scatterometer (C-SCAT) is presented. Data were collected during a total of ten flights on board the NASA/Ames C-130B off the coast of Virginia. These backscatter measurements are vertically polarized, and were obtained over a full 360* in azimuth, at incidence angles ranging from 20 to 50 . The data set is now in a state where it can provide a unique test bed for normalized radar cross section (NRCS) model functions because of the variety of phenomena encountered, and the quantity and quality of the measurements.

Azimuthal Anisotropy In Radar Backscatter From The Ocean

Minima offset from nominal crosswind directions. Report describes experimental and theoretical study of azimuthal anisotropy in radar backscatter from surface of ocean. Important objective of this and related studies to enhance ability to sense speed and direction of surface wind remotely by use of airborne or spaceborne radar.

Studies of the location of azimuth modulation minima for Ku band ocean radar backscatter

An extensive data set of radar backscatter measurements at 14 GHz was used to evaluate the locations of the azimuthal modulation minima relative to the cross-wind directions. It was found that the minima were significantly offset from the cross-wind directions toward the downwind direction for the horizontal polarization data. These offsets were substantially smaller for the vertical polarization data. Simple scattering model calculations, based on the two-scale scattering approach, also show similar offsets. Implications of these results for the goephysical model function are discussed.

Studies of ocean radar backscatter and near surface winds relationship during FASINEX

The relationship between radar backscatter and surface wind was investigated using data of two separate studies conducted using a set of airborne radar backscatter measurements and the associated in-situ measurements obtained during the Frontal Air-Sea Interaction Experiment (FASINEX) on February 21, 1986. The results showed that the radar backscatter cross section, sigma(0), of the ocean correlates best with the friction velocity, rather than with the equivalent neutral stability wind, U(N), indicating that the existing model of sigma(0) vs U(N) is inadequate.
