Cometary rays - Magnetically channeled outflow

The present model of the structure and evolution of cometary rays views this radiation as the channeled outflow of cometary ions from the ionosphere. While ions in the central tail ray flow down the channel formed by the tailward closing of the draped interplanetary field, ions in the side rays flow through magnetic flux ropes that become embedded in the cometary ionosphere through Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of the cometary ionopause. The flux ropes tunnel through the ionosphere, penetrate the ionopause at two points, and extend out into the solar wind on both sides of the comet. Differences in observed cometary ray structure are attributed to differences in the radial distance and ecliptic latitude of different comets at the time of observation.

Ion Mass/Velocity/Charge Spectrometer

Ion spectrometer distributes ions two-dimensionally and measures three characteristics of incident-ion beam: (1) mass/charge distribution, (2) ion velocity distribution, and (3) direction of incidence. Also useful for diagnosis in experimental plasma physics in collisionless regime. Ion spectrometer uses novel combination of standard electrostatic and magnetic deflection techniques to sort incident ions according to speed, diretion of incidence, and mass/ charge ratio.

Advanced techniques for plasma composition and dynamics measurements

The current state of knowledge regarding the space plasma is briefly considered. It is found that certain problems arise in connection with conventional measurements. In many cases, three-dimensional measurements are needed and a good time resolution. The present investigation has the objective to review developments related to energetic ion mass spectrometers which are capable of resolving some of the ambiguities. The employment of electrostatic analyzers (ESA) combined with velocity filters is considered, taking into account an instrument which combines a quadrispherical electrostatic analyzer with electromagnetic filters. Such an instrument is being developed for the Galileo Mission to Jupiter. In connection with an evaluation of developments concerning linear and two-dimensional mass spectrometers, attention is given to instruments which are capable of measuring several masses simultaneously. Instruments utilizing the time of flight technique of measuring mass are also examined.

Relation between superheating and superacceleration of helium in the solar wind

Solar-wind data obtained by the OGO-5 and IMP-7-8 earth satellites show a positive correlation between the ratio of helium to hydrogen tempeatures, and the velocity difference between the two ions. Although this result disagrees with the Prognoz-1 results reported earlier in this journal, it is consistent with the expected control by Coulomb collisions when the solar-wind density is high.

Mass spectrometer has wide angular acceptance

Higher mass resolution is achieved by replacing conventional mass/velocity spectrometers with system of planar ac-modulated grids. System gives focusing for all angles of incidence. Ac-modulation and detection scheme minimizes sensitivity to light and other types of radiation.
