Operational experience with the Proto-DUNE NP02 and NP04 large volume liquid argon cryostats and their cryogenic systems at CERN

The far Detector of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will be housed in several large volume (about 12.500 m$^{3}$) liquid argon cryostats. The design principle of these large cryostats, and of the cryogenic system belonging to them, are investigated through the design, construction and operation of a series of prototype installations. The Neutrino Platform 02 (NP02) and 04 (NP04) cryostats, placed at CERN, contain DUNE proto-type detectors, each of them housed in an about 600 m$^{3}$ liquid argon bath. These cryostats, based on the membrane cryostat principle, and their cryogenic systems have been designed according to the DUNE principle. Measurements performed in these test stands shall confirm the foreseen heat loads into the cryostat systems entering via its walls, via detector cabling and via the cold electronics, shall confirm the low temperature gradient over the active detector volume and shall certify the liquid argon purification principle. This paper introduces the requirements for the NP02 and NP04 cryostats and their cryogenic systems, describes the design principle applied to these two systems and gives an overview of the different modes in which the two systems have been operating. The experimental results are presented and discussed, and “lessons learned” for future installations are dawn.

ICARUS: new voyage to sterile neutrino search in the Short Baseline Program

The ICARUS collaboration operated the 760-ton T600 detector in a successful three-year physics run at the underground LNGS laboratories studying neutrino oscillations with the CNGS neutrino beam from CERN, and searching for atmospheric neutrino interactions. ICARUS performed a sensitive search for LSND-like anomalous νe appearance in the CNGS beam, which contributed to the constraints on the allowed parameters to a narrow region around $Δm^2=1 e\text{V}^2$, where all the experimental results can be coherently accommodated at 90% C.L. After a significant overhaul at CERN, the T600 detector has been installed at Fermilab. In 2020 cryogenic commissioning began with detector cool down, liquid Argon filling and recirculation. ICARUS has started operations and is presently in its commissioning phase with the aim of collecting its first neutrino events from the Booster Neutrino Beam and the NuMI off-axis beam. The main goal of the first year of ICARUS data taking will then be the definitive verification of the recent claim by NEUTRINO-4 short baseline reactor experiment both in the $ν_μ$ channel with the BNB and in the $ν_e$ with NuMI. After the first year of operations, ICARUS will commence its search for evidence of a sterile neutrino jointly with the SBND near detector, within the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program. The ICARUS exposure to the NuMI beam will also give the possibility for other physics studies such as light dark matter searches and neutrino-Argon cross section measurements. The proposed contribution addresses ICARUS achievements, its status and plans for the new run at Fermilab and the ongoing developments of the analysis tools needed to fulfill its physics program.

Overhaul and installation of the ICARUS-T600 liquid argon TPC electronics for the FNAL Short Baseline Neutrino program

The ICARUS T600 liquid argon (LAr) time projection chamber (TPC) underwent a major overhaul at CERN in 2016–2017 to prepare for the operation at FNAL in the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program. This included a major upgrade of the photo-multiplier system and of the TPC wire read-out electronics. The full TPC wire read-out electronics together with the new wire biasing and interconnection scheme are described. The design of a new signal feed-through flange is also a fundamental piece of this overhaul whose major feature is the integration of all electronics components onto the signal flange. Initial functionality tests of the full TPC electronics chain installed in the T600 detector at FNAL are also described.

Design and implementation of the new scintillation light detection system of ICARUS T600

ICARUS T600 is the far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab (U.S.A.), which foresees three Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers along the Booster Neutrino Beam line to search for LSND-like sterile neutrino signal. The T600 detector underwent a significant overhauling process at CERN, introducing new technological developments while maintaining the already achieved performances. The realization of a new liquid argon scintillation light detection system is a primary task of the detector overhaul. As the detector will be subject to a huge flux of cosmic rays, the light detection system should allow the 3D reconstruction of events contributing to the identification of neutrino interactions in the beam spill gate. The design and implementation of the new scintillation light detection system of ICARUS T600 is described.

A measurement of the group velocity of scintillation light in liquid argon

The propagation velocity of scintillation light in liquid argon vg at λ ∼ 128 nm wavelength, has been measured for the first time in a dedicated experimental setup at CERN. The obtained result 1/vg = 7.46 ± 0.08 ns/m, is then used to derive the value of the refractive index (n) and the Rayleigh scattering length (L) for liquid argon in the VUV region. For λ = 128 nm we found n= 1.358 ± 0.003 and L= 99.1 ± 2.3 cm. The measured values are of interest for a variety of experiments searching for rare events like neutrino and dark matter interactions. The derived quantities also represent key information for theoretical models describing the propagation of scintillation light in liquid argon.

Baby MIND detector first physics run

Baby MIND is a Magnetized Iron Neutrino Detector, serving as a downstream magnetized muon range detector for WAGASCI on the T2K beam line in Japan. The first physics run of Baby MIND together with other WAGASCI sub-detectors took place in the period from November 2019 to February 2020 (T2K run10), where a total of $4.8 \times 10^{20}$ Protons on target (POT) was delivered. Preliminary results showing Baby MIND data quality, detector performance and examples of neutrino interactions on iron during the first physics run are presented.

Studies on cosmogenic nuclides in meteorites with regard to an application as potential depth indicators

Measurements of stable and radioactive spallation products in meteorites allow to investigate their histories, especially with respect to the exposure to galactic cosmic ray particles and the pre-atmospheric size of the object. While the concentrations of spallation products lead to the determination of exposure and terrestrial ages, production rate ratios are characteristic for the location of the sample in the meteorite. So, one of the aims of this investigation on meteorites is to obtain depth indicators from suitable pairs of cosmogenic nuclides. Because of the different depth profiles for nuclide productions it is necessary to determine the concentrations of a larger number of spallation products in aliquots of a single small sample. Such same sample measurements of Be-10 and light noble gases were performed on 15 ordinary chondrites (7 H- and 8 L-chondrites. Be-10 was determined by accelerator mass spectrometry and the noble gases were measured by static mass spectrometry. The results are summarized and discussed.

Cosmogenic rare gases and 10-Be in a cross section of Knyahinya

The concentrations of cosmogenic nuclides were studied as a function of shielding on samples from a cross section of the 293 kg main fragment of the L5 chondrite Knyahinya. The stone broke into two nearly symmetrical parts upon its fall in 1866. The planar cross section has diameters between 40 and 55 cm. He, Ne, and Ar were measured on about 20 samples by mass spectrometry and the 10-Be activities on aliquots of 10 selected samples were determined by AMS. The 10-Be data are presented and the abundances of spallogenic nuclides are compared with the model calculations reported by Reedy for spherical L chondrites. The 10-Be production rates in Knyahinya are shown versus the shielding parameter 22-Ne/21-Ne.
