Analysis of the MUSIC 3 He Multiplicity Data

A measurement campaign called the Measurement of Uranium Subcritical and Critical (MUSiC) was performed on a range of configurations of highly-enriched uranium (HEU) from December 2020 through April of 2021. While part of the focus was to measure reactor kinetics parameters on delayed supercritical systems, an additional focus was performing neutron noise measurements on subcritical configurations from deeply subcritical to nearly delayed critical. Multiple detector systems were used to perform these measurements, such as a 3 He multiplicity detector called the Neutron Multiplicity Array Detector (NoMAD) and a liquid scintillator system called the Rossi-α Measurement Rapid Organic Discriminating Detector (RAM-RODD). Also included were a scintillator system from the University of Michigan and a set of small 3He tubes that have previously been used to measure Rossi-α values on near-critical systems. The focus of this paper will be a comparison of prospective analysis methods for the NoMAD measurements. Previous subcritical measurements at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) submitted to the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) used the Hage-Cifarelli formalism of the Feynman Variance-to-Mean method. This relies on the time correlations of neutron detections to infer the spontaneous fission rate and neutron multiplication of a system through binning the time tagged detections and analyzing resulting histograms of the numbers of counts. However, there are other neutron noise methods that rely on similar processes, such as the Hansen-Dowdy formalism which uses a slightly different methodology to extract multiplication from the neutron multiplicity counting moments. Comparisons can be made between these experimental results and those obtained through simulations to validate or identify deficiencies in analysis, detection methods, or the underlying nuclear data. Different time gating strategies and their effects on count rate uncertainties are also investigated.

Control Law-Control Allocation Interaction: F/A-18 PA Simulation Test - Bed

This report documents the first stage of research into Control Law - Control Allocation Interactions. A three-year research effort was originally proposed: 1. Create a desktop flight simulation environment under which experiments related to the open questions may be conducted. 2. Conduct research to determine which aspects of control allocation have impact upon control law design that merits further research. 3. Conduct research into those aspects of control allocation identified above, and their impacts upon control law design. Simulation code was written utilizing the F/A-18 airframe in the power approach (PA) configuration. A dynamic inversion control law was implemented and used to drive a state-of-the-art control allocation subroutine.

Life systems for a lunar base

The Biosphere 2 project is pioneering work on life systems that can serve as a prototype for long-term habitation on the Moon. This project will also facilitate the understanding of the smaller systems that will be needed for initial lunar base life-support functions. In its recommendation for a policy for the next 50 years in space, the National Commission on Space urged, 'To explore and settle the inner Solar System, we must develop biospheres of smaller size, and learn how to build and maintain them' (National Commission on Space, 1986). The Biosphere 2 project, along with its Biospheric Research and Development Center, is a materially closed and informationally and energetically open system capable of supporting a human crew of eight, undertaking work to meet this need. This paper gives an overview of the Space Biospheres Ventures' endeavor and its lunar applications.

Biological Life Support Technologies: Commercial Opportunities

The papers from the workshop on Biological Life Support Technologies: Commercial Opportunities are presented. The meeting attracted researchers in environmental and bioregenerative systems. The role of biological support technologies was evaluated in the context of the global environmental challenge on Earth and the space exploration initiative, with its goal of a permanent space station, lunar base, and Mars exploration.
