Schneider Springs Fire Study 2023 for Ecosystem Respiration Rates: Surface Water Chemistry and Hydrologic Sensor Data across the Yakima River Basin, Washington, USA (v2)

This dataset supports a broader study examining the drivers of spatial variability in wildfire impacts across the Yakima River Basin. Data provided within this dataset were generated from sample collection across 17 total sites (8 sites affected by a recent wildfire, 9 sites unaffected by a recent wildfire) within multiple rivers throughout the Yakima River Basin in Washington, USA from May-July 2023. Fire affected sites are defined as those affected by the 2021 Schneider Springs Fire, based on the drainage area of the streams being within the 2021 Schneider Springs Fire burn perimeter or not (Figure 1, below). The contents include surface water geochemistry data (dissolved organic carbon; total dissolved nitrogen; total suspended solids); short-term sonde data (specific conductivity; turbidity; pH; chlorophyll A; temperature); stream depth data; stream velocity; manual chamber open channel respiration data; sensor time-series data (oxygen; water pressure; barometric pressure); field metadata (including qualitative information on in stream and river corridor characteristics); and environmental context photos taken in the field. The dataset also includes a summary file of the sensor data and plots of the sensor data. Sensors were only recovered at 15 out of the 17 sites, and not all sensors were recovered at all 15 sites (see Methods section for more details), therefore all data does not exist at all sites. Data from a 2022 study at the same sites, as well as additional sites, can be found at https://data.ess-dive.lbl.gov/view/doi:10.15485/1969566. The data package was originally published in November 2023. It was updated in June 2025 (v2; modified files). See the change history section in the readme for more details. For details on how to navigate data packages generated by this project, see https://data.ess-dive.lbl.gov/portals/PNNLRiverCorridorSFA/About. This dataset is comprised of one folder with field photos and one main data folder with two subfolders. The main data folder consists of (1) file-level metadata; (2) data dictionary; (3) field metadata; (4) field protocol; (5) readme; (6) international generic sample number (IGSN) mapping file; and (7) stream depth and averages. The sensor data subfolder consists of (1) sensor installation methods summary; (2) stream velocity; and (3) six subfolders. The BarotrollAtm (barometric pressure; temperature), DepthHOBO (water pressure; temperature), MantaRiver (specific conductivity; turbidity; pH; chlorophyll A; temperature), EXO (specific conductivity; pH; temperature), miniDOT (dissolved oxygen; temperature), and miniDOTManualChamber (dissolved oxygen; temperature) contain time-series data, plots, and summary files. The sample data subfolder consists of (1) total suspended solids (TSS) data; (2) dissolved organic carbon (DOC, measured as non-purgeable organic carbon, NPOC) data and averages; (3) total dissolved nitrogen (TN) data and averages; and (4) methods codes. All files are .csv, .pdf, .jpg, .jpeg, or .mov.

Multispectral and thermal surface imagery and surface elevation mosaics - Pendleton Feb 2023

This data set contains high-resolution image products (orthomosaics) acquired from midsized uncrewed aerial systems that have been processed for value-added quality. The instrument Altum multispectral imager by Micasense, captures in six bands (blue - 475nm, green - 560nm, red - 668nm, red edge - 717nm, near-infrared - 840 and LWIR/thermal - 11000nm. The optical bands are converted to reflectance via custom code using the instantaneous band horizontal irradiance ratio to the radiance of the pixel. The code used to develop these images first uses tools from the Micasense Python library to apply dark level corrections, row gradient corrections, and radiometric corrections. Next, it uses the processing API from Agisoft Metashape software to align and mosaic the processed imagery, following the processes developed by the USGS' structure from motion workflow documentation. Captures from different altitudes are used to produce an orthomosaic at each height. A tif image containing information related to the six spectral bands, and a digital elevation model (DEM), a tif image containing information related to the elevation of the surveyed terrain. 1 https://www.arm.gov/publications/tech_reports/handbooks/doe-sc-arm-tr-281.pdf 2 https://micasense.github.io/imageprocessing/MicaSense%20Image%20Processing%20Setup.html 3 https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2021/1039/ofr20211039.pdf

Multispectral and thermal surface imagery and surface elevation mosaics - SGP July 2022

This data set contains high-resolution image products (orthomosaics) acquired from midsized uncrewed aerial systems that have been processed for value-added quality. The instrument itself, a multispectral imager, the Altum by Micasense, captures six spectral bands (red, green blue, NIR, red edge, and LWIR/thermal1) as radiance, which is converted to reflectance via custom code. The code used to develop these images first uses tools from the Micasense Python library2 to apply dark level corrections, row gradient corrections, and radiometric corrections. Next, it uses the processing API from Agisoft Metashape software to align and mosaic the processed imagery, following the processes developed by the USGS' structure from motion workflow documentation.3 Captures at different altitudes (recorded in MSL) produce an orthomosaic, a tif image containing information related to the six spectral bands, and a digital elevation model (DEM), a tif image containing information related to the elevation of the surveyed terraine. Metadata included in every image can be used to extract lat, lon, and reflectance values. 1 https://www.arm.gov/publications/tech_reports/handbooks/doe-sc-arm-tr-281.pdf 2 https://micasense.github.io/imageprocessing/MicaSense%20Image%20Processing%20Setup.html 3 https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2021/1039/ofr20211039.pdf

Revised monthly energy generation estimates for 1,500 hydroelectric power plants in the United States

Abstract The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) conducts a regular survey (form EIA-923) to collect annual and monthly net generation for more than ten thousand U.S. power plants. Approximately 90% of the ~1,500 hydroelectric plants included in this data release are surveyed at annual resolution only and thus lack actual observations of monthly generation. For each of these plants, EIA imputes monthly generation values using the combined monthly generating pattern of other hydropower plants within the corresponding census division. The imputation method neglects local hydrology and reservoir operations, rendering the monthly data unsuitable for various research applications. Here we present an alternative approach to disaggregate each unobserved plant’s reported annual generation using proxies of monthly generation—namely historical monthly reservoir releases and average river discharge rates recorded downstream of each dam. Evaluation of the new dataset demonstrates substantial and robust improvement over the current imputation method, particularly if reservoir release data are available. The new dataset—named RectifHyd—provides an alternative to EIA-923 for U.S. scale, plant-level, monthly hydropower net generation (2001–2020). RectifHyd may be used to support power system studies or analyze within-year hydropower generation behavior at various spatial scales.
