Large space observatories of the 21st century

Early in the 21st century, advanced space telescopes will be readied to continue the astronomical observations of the Great Observatories currently under development. This paper describes representative concepts from the very large UV/optical and gamma-ray telescopes under study by NASA, the scientific community, and industry. These studies demonstrate that historical approaches to improving the resolution and sensitivity of space telescopes have reached technology barriers which can only be overcome by innovative solutions to the telescope design. Some of the key technology issues which are guiding the approaches for advanced space telescopes are discussed, and arguments are presented that enabling technology development for these future systems must commence now.

Coherent optical system of modular imaging collectors (COSMIC) - An approach for a large aperture high angular resolution telescope in space

Very high angular resolution can be achieved in UV/optical astronomy through interferometers in space. A concept analysis of COSMIC, which may be placed into orbit by the Space Shuttle in the late 1990's, is discussed. The photon-collecting area is three times larger than that of Space Telescope (ST), and exceeds its resolution by approximately an order of magnitude. Several alternative configurations are presented to scope the extent of design approaches which may be achievable within the transportation capability of the Space Shuttle.

Science and applications space platform

The concept for the Platform/Power System combination (supported by Shuttle visits) is presented from the NASA-sponsored Phase A study. The combination will cost-effectively free-fly small groups of unmanned low-earth payloads which have common accommodation needs. A manned support module and power system can provide elemental and growth capability for 3-6 month missions. The configuration and payload accommodations of the combination systems are reviewed and schematized in detail. Flight operations for the payload science management will include the conduct of science operations, the monitoring of instrument performance, verification of the science data and the maintenance of the science mission plan.
