A massive open cluster hiding in full sight

ABSTRACT Obscuration and confusion conspire to limit our knowledge of the inner Milky Way. Even at moderate distances, the identification of stellar systems becomes compounded by the extremely high density of background sources. Here, we provide a very revealing example of these complications by unveiling a large, massive, young cluster in the Sagittarius arm that has escaped detection until now despite containing more than 30 stars brighter than G = 13. By combining Gaia DR2 astrometry, Gaia and 2MASS photometry, and optical spectroscopy, we find that the new cluster, which we name Valparaiso 1, located at $\sim 2.3\,$ kpc, is about 75 Ma old and includes a large complement of evolved stars, among which we highlight the 4 d classical Cepheid CM Sct and an M-type giant that probably represents the first detection of an asymptotic giant branch star in a Galactic young open cluster. Although strong differential reddening renders accurate parameter determination unfeasible with the current data set, direct comparison to clusters of similar age suggests that Valparaiso 1 was born as one of the most massive clusters in the solar neighbourhood, with an initial mass close to $10^{4}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$.

INTEGRAL Long-Term Monitoring of the Supergiant Fast X-Ray Transient XTE J1739-302

Context. In the past few years, a new class of High Mass X-Ray Binaries (HMXRB) has been claimed to exist, the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXT). These are X-ray binary systems with a compact companion orbiting a supergiant star which show very short and bright outbursts in a series of activity periods overimposed on longer quiescent periods. Only very recently the first attempts to model the behaviour of these sources have been published, some of them within the framework of accretion from clumpy stellar winds. Aims. Our goal is to analyze the properties of XTE J1739-302/IGR J17391-3021 within the context of the clumpy structure of the supergiant wind. Methods. We have used INTEGRAL and RXTE/PCA observations in order to obtain broad band (1 - 200 keV) spectra and light curves of XTE J1739-302 and investigate its X-ray spectrum and temporal variability. Results. We have found that XTE J1739-302 follows a much more complex behaviour than expected. Far from presenting a regular variability pattern, XTE J1739-302 shows periods of high, intermediate, and low flaring activity.

XTE JO111.2-7317: An X-Ray Binary in the SMC

The observed characteristics of the nebulosity surrounding the SMC High Mas X-ray Binary XTE J0111.2-7316 are examined in the context of three possible nebular types: SNR, bowshock and HII region. Observational evidence is presented which appears to support the interpretation that the nebulosity surrounding XTE JO111.2-7316 is an HII region. The source therefore appears to be a normal SMC BeXRB embedded in a locally enhanced ISM which it has photoionised to create an HII region.

Optical Spectroscopy of V635 Cassiopeiae/4U 0115+63

In this paper we present two data sets that can be used to constrain the physical and geometric models for the circumstellar disk. The companion's spectral type is a critical parameter for modelling the disk.
