Surface Studies of β-1,3,5,7-Tetranitro-1,3,5,7-Tetrazoctane and Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate from Density Functional Tight-Binding Calculations and Implications on Crystal Shape

Here, we use density functional tight-binding (DFTB) theory to calculate the surface energies of two energetic crystals: monoclinic β-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazoctane (β-HMX) and tetragonal pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN). The results are then employed to determine crystal shapes using the Bravais–Friedel–Donnay–Harker, attachment energy, and surface energy models. We find that energy-based models yield predictions in good agreement with experimental observations. Additionally, we propose a simple model that reframes surface energy as a measure of the lost intermolecular interactions during the formation of a surface from the bulk. The model accurately captures the results from the DFTB calculations and enables us to explain and predict surface energies as a function of the local molecular environment.

Co-design for Particle Applications at Exascale

Co-design across the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) has been critical for both enabling science applications and bringing disparate communities together. Developing and porting applications to the various high-performance computing (HPC) architectures on pre-exascale and exascale computers has been quite challenging due to the diversity of hardware features and software stacks. The Co-design Center for Particle Applications (CoPA) has developed and enhanced the Cabana and PROGRESS/BML libraries to facilitate the creation of new particle applications, make existing particle applications exascale capable, and allow teams to explore new capabilities. Particle methods from atomistic, mesoscale, continuum, through cosmological scales have been built with Cabana, along with new possibilities for application coupling. Similarly, the PROGRESS/BML library has enabled quantum particle applications with linear algebra solvers to use advanced hardware. Across these CoPA-developed libraries, the co-design abstraction layer combines performance portability with math library support to facilitate separation of concerns and directly support science runs.

Quantum computing for a profusion of postman problem variants

In this paper we study the viability of solving the Chinese Postman Problem, a graph routing optimization problem, and many of its variants on a quantum annealing device. Routing problem variants considered include graph type, directionally varying weights, number of parties involved in routing, among others. We put emphasis on the explanation of how to convert such problems into quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problems. QUBO is one of two equivalent natural paradigms for quantum annealing devices, the other being the Ising Model. We also expand upon a previously discovered algorithm for solving the Chinese Postman Problem on a closed undirected graph to decrease the number of constraints and variables used in the problem. Optimal annealing parameter settings and constraint weight values are discussed based on results from implementation on the D-Wave 2000Q and Advantage. Results from classical, purely quantum, and hybrid algorithms are compared.
