Method for forming thin composite solid electrolyte film for lithium batteries

A composite solid electrolyte film is formed by dissolving a lithium salt such as lithium iodide in a mixture of a first solvent which is a cosolvent for the lithium salt and a binder polymer such as polyethylene oxide and a second solvent which is a solvent for the binder polymer and has poor solubility for the lithium salt. Reinforcing filler such as alumina particles are then added to form a suspension followed by the slow addition of binder polymer. The binder polymer does not agglomerate the alumina particles. The suspension is cast into a uniform film.

Improved Preparation Of Solid-Electrolyte Films

Modified process ensures compatability among components. Improved chemical-blending procedure produces composite material for thin, large-area solid-electrolyte films for lithium batteries. Films have uniform compositions and dimensionally stable. Transport number of their lithium cations is high, close to unity. Batteries made with these films expected to have energy and power densities up to about 100 W h/kg and 100 W/kg, respectively. Previous version of composite material described in "Composite Solid Electrolyte for Lithium Cells" (NPO-18694).

Improved Fabrication Of Cathodes For Solid-State Li Cells

Utilization of cathode material increased. Improved composite-cathode/polymer-electrolyte units for solid-state lithium secondary electrochemical cells fabricated in modified version of original method of fabrication. Further development of units may lead to increases in energy and power densities and in cycle lives of rechargeable lithium cells.

Superacid-Based Lithium Salts For Polymer Electrolytes

Solid polymer electrolytes exhibiting high lithium-ion conductivities made by incorporating salts of superacids into thin films of polyethylene oxide (PEO). These and other solid-polymer electrolytes candidates for use in rechargeable lithium-based electrochemical cells. Increases in room-temperature lithium-ion conductivities of solid electrolytes desirable because they increase achievable power and energy densities.

Composite Solid Electrolyte For Lithium Cells

Composite solid electrolyte material consists of very small particles, each coated with thin layer of Lil, bonded together with polymer electrolyte or other organic binder. Material offers significant advantages over other solid electrolytes in lithium cells and batteries. Features include high ionic conductivity and strength. Composite solid electrolyte expected to exhibit flexibility of polymeric electrolytes. Polymer in composite solid electrolyte serves two purposes: used as binder alone, conduction taking place only in AI2O3 particles coated with solid Lil; or used as both binder and polymeric electrolyte, providing ionic conductivity between solid particles that it binds together.

Photocured Gelled Electrolytes For Secondary Li Cells

Class of photocured polymers exhibiting lithium-ion conductivities greater than those of well-studied polymers based on polyethylene oxide (PEO) show promise as polymeric electrolytes in rechargeable lithium cells. Increase in conductivity occasioned by use of electrolytes, coupled with amenability of electrolytes to formation into uniform thin (less than 25 micrometers thick), wide films, expected to result in cells with power densities greater than 100 W h/kg and charge/discharge rates exceeding currents equal, in amperes, to ampere-hour ratings. All-solid-state lithium batteries containing these electrolytes used as high-power, high-rate rechargeable power sources in commercial and aerospace applications.

Reversible non-volatile switch based on a TCNQ charge transfer complex

A solid-state synaptic memory matrix (10) having switchable weakly conductive connections at each node (24) whose resistances can be selectably increased or decreased over several orders of magnitude by control signals of opposite polarity, and which will remain stable after the signals are removed, comprises an insulated substrate (16), a set of electrical conductors (14) upon which is deposited a layer (18) of an organic conducting polymer, which changes from an insulator to a conductor upon the transfer of electrons, such as polymerized pyrrole doped with 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), covered by a second set of conductors (20) laid at right angles to the first.

Gelled Electrolytes For Lithium Batteries

Gelled polymer electrolyte consists of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), LiBF4, and propylene carbonate (PC). Thin films of electrolyte found to exhibit stable bulk conductivities of order of 10 to the negative 3rd power S/cm at room temperature. Used in thinfilm rechargeable lithium batteries having energy densities near 150 W h/kg.

12-Crown-4 Ether Improves Rechargeable Lithium Cells

Experiments show addition of 12-crown-4 ether (12Cr4) to thin film of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and LiBF4 reduces charge-transfer resistance of film and enhances performance of electrochemical cell in which film is electrolyte, anode is lithium, and cathode is LixCoO2. By increasing conductivity of the electrolyte, 12Cr4 reduces polarization loss; enabling cell to sustain higher current. Result is new type of rechargeable lithium cell.

Secondary Li battery incorporating 12-Crown-4 ether

A rechargeable lithium battery which utilizes a polyethylene oxide (PEO) solid polymeric electrolyte complexed with a lithium salt is disclosed. The conductivity is increased an order of magnitude and interfacial charge transfer resistance is substantially decreased by incorporating a minor amount of 12-Crown-4 ether in the PEO-lithium salt solid electrolyte film. Batteries containing the improved electrolyte permit operation at a lower temperature with improved efficiency.

Copper Chloride Cathode For Liquid-Sodium Cell

Rechargeable liquid-sodium cell with copper chloride cathode offers substantial increase in energy density over cells made with other cathode materials. Unit has theoretical maximum energy density of 1135 W.h/kg. Generates electricity by electrochemical reaction of molten sodium and solid copper chloride immersed in molten electrolyte, sodium tetrachloroaluminate at temperature of equal to or greater than 200 degrees C. Wall of alumina tube separates molten electrolyte from molten sodium anode. Copper chloride cathode embedded in pores of sintered nickel cylinder or directly sintered.

Copper chloride cathode for a secondary battery

Higher energy and power densities are achieved in a secondary battery based on molten sodium and a solid, ceramic separator such as a beta alumina and a molten catholyte such as sodium tetrachloroaluminate and a copper chloride cathode. The higher cell voltage of copper chloride provides higher energy densities and the higher power density results from increased conductivity resulting from formation of copper as discharge proceeds.

Variable-Resistivity Material For Memory Circuits

Nonvolatile memory elements packed densely. Electrically-erasable, programmable, read-only memory matrices made with newly-synthesized organic material of variable electrical resistivity. Material, polypyrrole doped with tetracyanoquinhydrone (TCNQ), changes reversibly between insulating or higher-resistivity state and conducting or low-resistivity state. Thin film of conductive polymer separates layer of row conductors from layer of column conductors. Resistivity of film at each intersection and, therefore, resistance of memory element defined by row and column, increased or decreased by application of suitable switching voltage. Matrix circuits made with this material useful for experiments in associative electronic memories based on models of neural networks.
