Evidence of Cooperative Effects for the Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 Spin Crossover Molecular Complex in Polyaniline Plus Iron Magnetite

The spin crossover complex Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 and its composite, Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 , combined with the conducting polymer polyaniline (PANI) plus varying concentrations of iron magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles were studied. A cooperative effect is evident from the hysteresis width in the plot of magnetic susceptibility multiplied by temperature versus temperature (χ m T versus T) for Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 with PANI plus varying concentrations of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The hysteresis width in the composites vary no more than 2 K with respect to the pristine Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 spin crossover crystallites despite the fact that there exists a high degree of miscibility of the Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 spin crossover complex with the PANI. The Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles in the Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 plus PANI composite tend to agglomerate at higher concentrations regardless of the spin state of Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 . Of note is that the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are shown to be antiferromagnetically coupled with the Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 when Fe(phen) 2 (NCS) 2 is in the high spin state.

Tuning In-Plane Magnetic Anisotropy and Interfacial Exchange Coupling in Epitaxial La 2/3 Sr 1/3 CoO 3 /La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 Heterostructures

Controlling the in-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy and interfacial exchange coupling between ferromagnetic (FM) layers plays a key role in next-generation spintronic and magnetic memory devices. In this work, we explored the effect of tuning the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of La 2/3 Sr 1/3 CoO 3 (LSCO) and La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 (LSMO) layers and the corresponding effect on interfacial exchange coupling by adjusting the thickness of the LSCO layer (t LSCO ). The epitaxial LSCO/LSMO bilayers were grown on (110) o -oriented NdGaO 3 (NGO) substrates with a fixed LSMO (top layer) thickness of 6 nm and LSCO (bottom layer) thicknesses varying from 1 to 10 nm. Despite the small difference (~0.2%) in lattice mismatch between the two in-plane directions, [001] o and [11̅0] o , a pronounced in-plane magnetic anisotropy was observed. Soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism hysteresis loops revealed that for t LSCO ≤ 4 nm, the easy axes for both LSCO and LSMO layers were along the [001] o direction, and the LSCO layer was characterized by magnetically active Co 2+ ions that strongly coupled to the LSMO layer. No exchange bias effect was observed in the hysteresis loops. In contrast, along the [11̅0] o direction, the LSCO and LSMO layers displayed a small difference in their coercivity values, and a small exchange bias shift was observed. As t LSCO increased above 4 nm, the easy axis for the LSCO layer remained along the [100] o direction, but it gradually rotated to the [11̅0] o direction for the LSMO layer, resulting in a large negative exchange bias shift. Therefore, we provide a way to control the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and exchange bias by tuning the interfacial exchange coupling between the two FM layers.

Element-Specific Study of Magnetic Anisotropy and Hardening in SmCo 5– x Cu x Thin Films

This work investigates the effect of copper substitution on the magnetic properties of SmCo 5 thin films synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy. A series of thin films with varying concentrations of Cu were grown under otherwise identical conditions to disentangle structural and compositional effects on the magnetic behavior. The combined experimental and theoretical studies show that Cu substitution at the Co 3g sites not only stabilizes the formation of the SmCo 5 structure but also enhances magnetic anisotropy and coercivity. Density functional theory calculations indicate that Sm(Co 4 Cu 3g ) 5 possesses a higher single-ion anisotropy as compared to pure SmCo 5 . In addition, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism reveals that Cu substitution causes an increasing decoupling of the Sm 4f and Co 3d moments. Scanning transmission electron microscopy confirms predominantly SmCo 5 phase formation and reveals nanoscale inhomogeneities in the Cu and Co distribution. Our study based on thin film model systems and advanced characterization as well as modeling reveals novel aspects of the complex interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to magnetic hysteresis in rare-earth-based magnets, i.e., the combination of increased intrinsic anisotropy due to Cu substitution and the extrinsic effect of inhomogeneous elemental distribution of Cu and Co.

Ultra-thin lithium aluminate spinel ferrite films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and low damping

Ultra-thin films of low damping ferromagnetic insulators with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy have been identified as critical to advancing spin-based electronics by significantly reducing the threshold for current-induced magnetization switching while enabling new types of hybrid structures or devices. Here, we have developed a new class of ultra-thin spinel structure Li 0.5 Al 1.0 Fe 1.5 O 4 (LAFO) films on MgGa 2 O 4 (MGO) substrates with: 1) perpendicular magnetic anisotropy; 2) low magnetic damping and 3) the absence of degraded or magnetic dead layers. These films have been integrated with epitaxial Pt spin source layers to demonstrate record low magnetization switching currents and high spin-orbit torque efficiencies. These LAFO films on MGO thus combine all of the desirable properties of ferromagnetic insulators with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, opening new possibilities for spin based electronics.

Limits to the strain engineering of layered square-planar nickelate thin films

The layered square-planar nickelates, Nd n+1 Ni n O 2n+2 , are an appealing system to tune the electronic properties of square-planar nickelates via dimensionality; indeed, superconductivity was recently observed in Nd 6 Ni 5 O 12 thin films. Here, we investigate the role of epitaxial strain in the competing requirements for the synthesis of the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper compound, Nd 4 Ni 3 O 10 , and subsequent reduction to the square-planar phase, Nd 4 Ni 3 O 8 . We synthesize our highest quality Nd 4 Ni 3 O 10 films under compressive strain on LaAlO 3 (001), while Nd 4 Ni 3 O 10 on NdGaO 3 (110) exhibits tensile strain-induced rock salt faults but retains bulk-like transport properties. A high density of extended defects forms in Nd 4 Ni 3 O 10 on SrTiO 3 (001). Films reduced on LaAlO 3 become insulating and form compressive strain-induced c-axis canting defects, while Nd 4 Ni 3 O 8 films on NdGaO 3 are metallic. This work provides a pathway to the synthesis of Nd n+1 Ni n O 2n+2 thin films and sets limits on the ability to strain engineer these compounds via epitaxy.

Magnetic properties versus interface density in rigid-exchange-coupled amorphous multilayers with induced uniaxial anisotropy

We demonstrate the possibility to tune the saturation magnetization, coercivity, and uniaxial in-plane anisotropy constant in amorphous bilayers and multilayers of Co 85 (Al 70 Zr 30 ) 15 and Sm 11 Co 82 Ti 7 through the interface density. From magnetometry and x-ray circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements, we conclude that the easy-axis coercivity μ 0 H c increases four times when the number of bilayer repetitions, N, increases from 1 to 10 within a constant total sample thickness of 20 nm. At the same time, the anisotropy constant K u also increases by a factor four, whereas the saturation magnetization M s decreases slightly. The Co spin and orbital moments, m s and m l , are found to be approximately constant within the sample series. The average total Co moment is only 0.8-0.9 μ B /atom, but the m l /m s ratio is strongly enhanced compared to pure Co. Magnetization curves extracted from XMCD measurements show that the Co and Sm moments are ferromagnetically coupled for all samples.

Domain-wall magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic hexagonal YbFeO 3 films

Electrical modulation of magnetic states in single-phase multiferroic materials, using domain-wall magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, can be enhanced substantially by controlling the population density of the ferroelectric (FE) domain walls during polarization switching. In this work, we investigate the domain-wall ME coupling in multiferroic h-YbFeO 3 thin films, in which the FE domain walls induce clamped antiferromagnetic (AFM) domain walls with reduced magnetization magnitude. Simulation according to the phenomenological theory indicates that the domain-wall ME effect is dramatically enhanced when the separation between the FE domain walls shrinks below the characteristic width of the clamped AFM domain walls during the ferroelectric switching. Experimentally, we show that while the magnetization magnitude remains same for both the positive and the negative saturation polarization states, there is evidence of magnetization reduction at the coercive voltages. These results suggest that the domain-wall ME effect is viable for electrical control of magnetization.

Antiferromagnetic metal phase in an electron-doped rare-earth nickelate

Long viewed as passive elements, antiferromagnetic materials have emerged as promising candidates for spintronic devices due to their insensitivity to external fields and potential for high-speed switching. Recent work exploiting spin and orbital effects has identified ways to electrically control and probe the spins in metallic antiferromagnets, especially in non-collinear or non-centrosymmetric spin structures. The rare-earth nickelate NdNiO 3 is known to be a non-collinear antiferromagnet in which the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering is concomitant with a transition to an insulating state. In this work, we find that for low electron doping, the magnetic order on the nickel site is preserved, whereas electronically, a new metallic phase is induced. We show that this metallic phase has a Fermi surface that is mostly gapped by an electronic reconstruction driven by bond disproportionation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the ability to write to and read from the spin structure via a large zero-field planar Hall effect. Our results expand the already rich phase diagram of rare-earth nickelates and may enable spintronics applications in this family of correlated oxides.

Evidence of dynamical effects and critical field in a cobalt spin crossover complex

The [Co(SQ) 2 (4-CN-py) 2 ] complex exhibits dynamical effects over a wide range of temperature. Additionally, the orbital moment, determined by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) with decreasing applied magnetic field, indicates a nonzero critical field for net alignment of magnetic moments, an effect not seen with the spin moment of [Co(SQ) 2 (4-CN-py) 2 ].

Positive spin Hall magnetoresistance in single-crystalline Pt/CoO(001) bilayers

Here, the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) effect in single-crystalline Pt/CoO(001) bilayers has been systematically investigated. X-ray magnetic linear dichroism measurements prove that CoO antiferromagnetic (AFM) spins can be switched into the direction orthogonal to the applied field. We find the SMR signal is comprised of two components related to either the switching of CoO AFM Néel order or the applied strong field effect. Both SMR components show a “positive” angular dependence with $R_{∥} > R_{⊥}$, while $R_{∥} (R_{⊥})$ is defined as the resistance with the applied in-plane field parallel (perpendicular) to the current. The observed positive SMR is mainly attributed to the uncompensated spins at the Pt/CoO interface, instead of the CoO AFM spins. Our study may attract a great deal of interest to understand the complicated SMR effect in AFM spintronics materials.

Determining the Oxygen Stoichiometry of Cobaltite Thin Films

Transition metal oxides (TMO) are promising materials to realize low-power neuromorphic devices. Their physical properties critically depend on their oxygen vacancy concentrations, whose experimental determination remains a challenging task. Here we focus on cobaltites, in particular La 1-x Sr x CoO 3-d (LSCO), and we present a strategy to identify fingerprints of oxygen vacancies in X-ray absorption (XA) spectra. Using a combination of experiment and theory, we show that the variation of the oxygen vacancy concentration in the perovskite phase of LSCO is correlated with the change of the relative peak positions of the O K-edge XA spectra. Furthermore, we also identify an additional geometrical fingerprint that captures both the changes of the Co-O bond length and Co-O-Co bond angle in the material due to the presence of oxygen vacancies. Finally, we predict the oxygen vacancy concentration of experimental samples and show how the resistivity of the oxide material may be tuned as a function of the defect concentration present in the system.

Superconductivity in a quintuple-layer square-planar nickelate

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the copper oxide materials, there have been sustained efforts to both understand the origins of this phase and discover new cuprate-like superconducting materials. One prime materials platform has been the rare-earth nickelates and indeed superconductivity was recently discovered in the doped compound Nd 0.8 Sr 0.2 NiO 2 . Undoped NdNiO 2 belongs to a series of layered square-planar nickelates with chemical formula Nd n+1 Ni n O 2n+2 and is known as the 'infinite-layer' (n=∞) nickelate. Furthermore, we report the synthesis of the quintuple-layer (n=5) member of this series, Nd 6 Ni 5 O 12 , in which optimal cuprate-like electron filling (d 8.8 ) is achieved without chemical doping. We observe a superconducting transition beginning at ~13 K. Electronic structure calculations, in tandem with magnetoresistive and spectroscopic measurements, suggest that Nd 6 Ni 5 O 12 interpolates between cuprate-like and infinite-layer nickelate-like behavior. In engineering a distinct superconducting nickelate, we identify the square-planar nickelates as a new family of superconductors which can be tuned via both doping and dimensionality.

Magnetic Field Perturbations to a Soft X-ray-Activated Fe (II) Molecular Spin State Transition

The X-ray-induced spin crossover transition of an Fe (II) molecular thin film in the presence and absence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The thermal activation energy barrier in the soft X-ray activation of the spin crossover transition for [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] molecular thin films is reduced in the presence of an applied magnetic field, as measured through X-ray absorption spectroscopy at various temperatures. The influence of a 1.8 T magnetic field is sufficient to cause deviations from the expected exponential spin state transition behavior which is measured in the field free case. We find that orbital moment diminishes with increasing temperature, relative to the spin moment in the vicinity of room temperature.
