X-ray observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxies AKN120 and MCG8-11-11

A new X-ray source, H0523-00, with the optically variable Seyfert 1 galaxy AKN 120 is identified. The source has a 2-10 keV X-ray flux of 2 x 10 to the -11th ergs/sq cm s which corresponds to a 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity of 10 to the 44th ergs/s. X-ray observations over a 1.5 year time span combined with contemporaneous optical photometry show a decrease in the optical with no corresponding decrease in the X-ray. In contrast, similar observations of MCG 8-11-11 show a contemporaneous decrease in optical and X-ray fluxes. It is noted that the infrared and X-ray spectral slopes for these two objects are similar, with the optical being steeper by roughly one unit.

The X-ray spectra of clusters of galaxies

Spectral observations of clusters of galaxies are presented. Pre-HEAO results are reviewed, noting that (1) the relationship between velocity dispersion and X-ray temperature suggests that clusters truly possess their virial mass; (2) high-temperature clusters are generally more centrally condensed or contain proportionately more intergalactic gas; (3) there is an inverse correlation between percentage of spirals and the ram pressure experienced by an average galaxy in the cluster; and (4) the most central condensed clusters have higher X-ray temperatures, emission integrals and X-ray luminosities. Consideration is also given to HEAO-1 and HEAO-2 results. It is concluded that the X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies is due to a hot evolved intracluster gas with about 10% of the virial mass of the cluster. The X-ray gas is direct evidence of a virial mass in the cluster. The gas interacts with the galaxies and may change their morphology.

HEAO-A2 observations of the X-ray spectra of the Centaurus and A1060 clusters of galaxies

The X-ray spectral observations of two low luminosity clusters of galaxies, Centaurus and A1060, are presented. An emission feature of the Centaurus cluster at 7.9 keV is detected at about one third of the strength of the 6.7 keV line. This higher energy line represents K sub beta emission from highly ionized iron. An isothermal model with an Fe emission line is discussed and it is shown that the model cannot fit the data of the Centaurus or the A1060 clusters. The implications of the two component nature of the continuum on the Fe abundance and the X-ray surface brightness distribution are discussed.

Elemental abundances in a type I SNR

The solid state spectrometer on the HEAO-2 X-ray observatory observed the X-ray spectrum of Tycho's SNR. The observations show a relative excess of line emission from Si, S, and Ar by or = 6 compared to that expected from a plasma of solar composition in collisional equilibrium and by a factor of or = 3 compared to Cas A. Similar excesses are not found for line emission from Mg and Fe. The data suggest that the SN observed by Tycho in 1572 produced significant amounts of Si group elements but did not eject large amounts of Fe as predicted by some models of Type I SN events.

The fluctuating and isotropic components of the cosmic X-ray background

Spatial fluctuations in the surface brightness of the extragalactic hard X-ray sky that are characteristic of distant unresolved discrete sources as well as the possible clumpiness of a hot universal plasma are being studied with the HEAO-1 A-2 experiment. The energy spectrum for this fluctuating component is directly compared to that of the isotropic background. The spectra of identified extragalactic objects recently obtained with experiments aboard both OSO-8 and HEAO-1 are used for examining the contribution of such sources to this fluctuating component of the background.
