Structural and Valence State Modification of Cobalt in CoPt Nanocatalysts in Redox Conditions

Platinum is the primary catalyst for many chemical reactions in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. However, platinum is both expensive and rare. Therefore, it is advantageous to combine Pt with another metal to reduce cost while also enhancing stability. To that end, Pt is often combined with Co to form Co-Pt nanocrystals. However, dynamical restructuring effects that occur during reaction in Co-Pt ensembles can impact catalytic properties. In this study, model Co 2 Pt 3 nanoparticles supported on carbon were characterized during a redox cycle with two in situ approaches, namely X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) using a multimodal microreactor. The sample was exposed to temperatures up to 500 °C under H 2 , and then to O 2 at 300 °C. Irreversible segregation of Co in the Co-Pt particles was seen during redox cycling and substantial changes of the oxidation state of Co were observed. After the H 2 treatment, a fraction of Co could not be fully reduced and incorporated into a mixed Co-Pt phase. Re-oxidation of the sample increased Co segregation, and the segregated material had a different valence state than in the fresh, oxidized sample. Furthermore, this in situ study describes dynamical restructuring effects in CoPt nano-catalysts at the atomic scale that are crucial to understand to improve the design of catalysts used in major chemical processes.

Gaussian processes for autonomous data acquisition at large-scale synchrotron and neutron facilities

The execution and analysis of complex experiments are challenged by the vast dimensionality of the underlying parameter spaces. Although an increase in data-acquisition rates should allow broader querying of the parameter space, the complexity of experiments and the subtle dependence of the model function on input parameters remains daunting owing to the sheer number of variables. New strategies for autonomous data acquisition are being developed, with one promising direction being the use of Gaussian process regression (GPR). GPR is a quick, non-parametric and robust approximation and uncertainty quantification method that can be applied directly to autonomous data acquisition. We review GPR-driven autonomous experimentation and illustrate its functionality using real-world examples from large experimental facilities in the USA and France. We introduce the basics of a GPR-driven autonomous loop with a focus on Gaussian processes, and then shift the focus to the infrastructure that needs to be built around GPR to create a closed loop. Finally, the case studies we discuss show that Gaussian-process-based autonomous data acquisition is a widely applicable method that can facilitate the optimal use of instruments and facilities by enabling the efficient acquisition of high-value datasets.

Broadband Circular Polarizers via Coupling in 3D Plasmonic Meta-Atom Arrays

In this work, we report broadband circular polarizers achieved by engineering the electromagnetic coupling between 3D meta-atoms in large-area arrays. The 3D meta-atoms are composed of bulk Au/Au nanocrystal (NC) bilayer helical arms, tailored in their number, length, and curvature through a one-step patterning process and postfabrication chemical and thermal treatments. By tuning the meta-atom array periodicity, hybridization originating from dipole–dipole and quadrupole–quadrupole interactions broadens the chiral response. We demonstrate circular polarizers operating at wavelengths spanning 2.5 to 5 μm, with a maximal transmission difference between left- and right-hand circularly polarized light of 43%.

Effect of Ni particle size on the production of renewable methane from CO 2 over Ni/CeO 2 catalyst

Production of ‘renewable Methane’ has attracted renewed research interest as a fundamental probe reaction and process for CO 2 utilization through potential use in C1 fuel production and even for future space exploration technologies. CO 2 methanation is a structure sensitive reaction on Ni/CeO 2 catalysts. To precisely elucidate the size effect of the Ni metal center on the CO 2 methanation performance, we prepared 2%Ni/CeO 2 catalysts with pre-synthesized uniform Ni particles (2, 4 and 8 nm) on a high surface area CeO 2 support. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ambient pressure X-ray photo spectroscopy (AP-XPS) characterization have confirmed that the catalyst structure and chemical state was uniform and stable under reaction conditions. The 8 nm sized catalyst showed superior methanation selectivity over the 4 and 2 nm counterparts, and the methanation activity in term of TOF is 10 times and 70 times higher than for the 4 and 2 nm counterparts, respectively. Here, the DRIFTS studies revealed that the larger Ni (8 nm particles) over CeO 2 efficiently facilitated the hydrogenation of the surface formate intermediates, which is proposed as the rate determining step accounting for the excellent CO 2 methanation performance.

Distinguishing Electron and Hole Dynamics in Functionalized CdSe/CdS Core/Shell Quantum Dots Using Complementary Ultrafast Spectroscopies and Kinetic Modeling

The evolution of excitation energy and photogenerated charges in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) functionalized with molecular acceptors can be probed on ultrafast time scales using techniques such as transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. However, historical interpretations that the 1S(e)-1S 3/2 (h) transition in Cd-chalcogenide QDs is fully attributable to electrons may be misleading, and multiexponential models used to fit TA kinetics do not correspond directly to specific photophysical processes. Here, we present visible-wavelength and mid-IR TA and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements to inform a comprehensive kinetic model of the photoexcited CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs functionalized with passivating oleic acid (OA), hole-accepting ferrocene, or electron-accepting naphthalene bisimide (NBI). We show that ~30% of the 1S signal and 72% of the IR signal can originate from holes in well-passivated core/shell QDs. We also demonstrate evidence of electron trapping in OA-capped core/shell QDs, with additional electron transfer and hole trapping in the QDs functionalized with NBI. Electron (hole) trapping and detrapping occur in 450 ± 100 ps (430 ± 70 ps) and 340 ± 100 ps (1.1 ± 0.4 ns) respectively, while the time constant for electron transfer to NBI is ~1.8 ns. The comprehensive picture of photophysical processes provided by the complementary ultrafast techniques and kinetic modeling can accelerate both the fundamental science and application development of nanostructured and molecular systems.

Engineering the Composition of Bimetallic Nanocrystals to Improve Hydrodeoxygenation Selectivity for 2-Acetylfuran

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of 2-acetylfuran (2-AF) was examined at 473 K and 33 bar over carbon-supported, bimetallic catalysts. Monodispersed, Pt-based (PtNi, PtCo, and PtCu) and Ni-based (NiCu) nanocrystals (NCs) with well-defined sizes and compositions were prepared via colloidal synthesis. Steady-state, flow-reactor measurements demonstrate that selectivities for the HDO reaction to 2-ethylfuran (2-EF) are strongly dependent on the alloy compositions. The HDO of 2-AF is shown to be sequential, where 2-EF can react further to form over-hydrogenated products. The NiCu 3 /C nanocatalyst was superior to the other bimetallics; with the optimal residence time, it was possible to achieve a selectivity of 75% 2-EF with 80% conversion of 2-AF, with good stability for up to at least 5 hours time-on-stream. Deactivation due to coking became an issue when the NCs were deposited on oxide supports with weak acidity (SiO 2 and γ-Al 2 O 3 ). Furthermore, this work provides insights into which bimetallic catalytic systems might be useful for HDO of 2-AF reaction.
