Visualization of the separation and subsequent transition near the leading edge of airfoils

A visual study was performed using the low speed smoke wind tunnels with the objective of obtaining a better understanding of the structure of leading edge separation bubbles on airfoils. The location of separation, transition and reattachment for a cylindrical nose constant-thickness airfoil model were obtained from smoke photographs and surface oil flow techniques. These data, together with static pressure distributions along the leading edge and upper surface of the model, produced the influence of Reynolds number, angle of attack, and trailing edge flap angle on the size and characteristics of the bubble. Additional visual insight into the unsteady nature of the separation bubble was provided by high speed 16 mm movies. The 8 mm color movies taken of the surface oil flow supported the findings of the high speed movies and clearly showed the formation of a scalloped spanwise separation line at the higher Reynolds number.

Cylindrical diffuser performance using a truncated plug nozzle

Cylindrical diffuser performance for a truncated plug nozzle without external flow was tested in a blowdown wind tunnel. The nozzle was designed for an exit Mach number of 1.9 and the plug was conical in shape from the throat and converged to the axis of symmetry at an angle of 10 degrees. The diffuser section was fashioned into two 13.97 cm lengths to facilitate boring of the duct diameter and to allow for testing of two different duct lengths. A slotted hypotube was installed in the base of the diffuser to measure pressure distribution down the centerline of the diffuser. The data obtained included: the typical centerline and sidewall pressure ratio variation along the diffuser, cell pressure ratio vs overall pressure ratio for long and short diffusers and a comparison of minimum experimental cell pressure ratio vs area ratio.

The Mach disc in truncated plug nozzle flows

The first shock reflection within truncated plug nozzle propulsive jets is investigated experimentally using a free jet blow-down facility. The locations and sizes of these reflections in axisymmetric plug nozzles, with cylindrical shrouds and conical truncated plugs, are presented. Data are presented for a range of ambient to nozzle total pressure ratios. The effects of Mach disk location and size resulting from changing plug length and from varying amounts of base bleed are documented.

Annular truncated plug nozzle flowfield and base pressure characteristics.

The flowfield and base pressure characteristics of an internal-external expansion, truncated plug nozzle are described over the pressure ratio range from 'open' wake to 'closed' wake conditions. The effect of plug length on these characteristics, including the process of wake 'closure' is also presented. An existing method for calculating the flowfield and base pressure, for 'closed' wake operation, is modified to include the internal shock wave generated near the shroud exit. The supersonic portion of the flow is calculated using rotational axisymmetric method of characteristics. The technique of Hartree is employed so that the downstream characteristic point locations can be chosen to fit the developing flowfield. An overexpansion technique is used to detect the internal shock wave in the vicinity of the shroud exit so that its effect on the plug base pressure could be determined. Good agreement between the analytical results and experimental data is obtained for 'closed' wake operations.

Basic flow characteristics of a linear aerospike nozzle segment.

The separated base flow region within a linear aerospike nozzle segment is investigated experimentally in an ejector-diffuser system. The nozzle-diffuser system and base pressure characteristics are described over the pressure ratio range from the 'open wake' to the 'closed wake' operation. Schlieren photographs and static pressure distributions along the test section centerline and top contour describe the transition from 'open wake' to 'closed wake' flow fields. Base pressure and static pressure distributions are utilized to present the effects of a ramp diffuser. The effects of base bleed on the base pressure ratio and structure of the nozzle flow field are also presented.
