Using host galaxy spectroscopy to explore systematics in the standardization of Type Ia supernovae

We use stacked spectra of the host galaxies of photometrically identified Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) to search for correlations between Hubble diagram residuals and the spectral properties of the host galaxies. Utilizing full spectrum fitting techniques on stacked spectra binned by Hubble residual, we find no evidence for trends between Hubble residuals and properties of the host galaxies that rely on spectral absorption features (<1.3σ), such as stellar population age, metallicity, and mass-to-light ratio. However, we find significant trends between the Hubble residuals and the strengths of [O ii] (4.4σ) and the Balmer emission lines (3σ). These trends are weaker than the well-known trend between Hubble residuals and host galaxy stellar mass (7.2σ) that is derived from broad-band photometry. After light-curve corrections, we see fainter SNe Ia residing in galaxies with larger line strengths. We also find a trend (3σ) between Hubble residual and the Balmer decrement (a measure of reddening by dust) using H β and H γ. The trend, quantified by correlation coefficients, is slightly more significant in the redder SNe Ia, suggesting that the bluer SNe Ia are relatively unaffected by dust in the interstellar medium of the host and that dust contributes to current Hubble diagram scatter impacting the measurement of cosmological parameters.

MIPS - The Multiband Imaging Photometer for SIRTF

The Multiband Imaging Photometer System (MIPS) for SIRTF is to be designed to reach as closely as possible the fundamental sensitivity and angular resolution limits for SIRTF over the 3 to 700 microns spectral region. It will use high performance photoconductive detectors from 3 to 200 microns with integrating JFET amplifiers. From 200 to 700 microns, the MIPS will use a bolometer cooled by an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator. Over much of its operating range, the MIPS will make possible observations at and beyond the conventional Rayleigh diffraction limit of angular resolution.

Stellar populations in local group dwarf elliptical galaxies. II - NGC 205

NGC 205, a dwarf elliptical companion of M31, was studied using deep CCD photometry on the VRI system. Consideration is given to a comparison between the giant branch and the Galactic globular clusters, the degree of chemical enrichment in the outer parts of NGC 204, and the setting of constraints on the stellar population of NGC 205. Should the distance of the galaxy be that of M31, this field's stellar population is extremely old. If star formation in NGC 205 is a recurring phenomenon, it is confined to the interior of the galaxy. Should the stellar population of NGC 205 be as old as Galactic globular clusters, its distance modulus is 24.3 + or - 0.2. The giant branch location corresponds to a mean metallicity greater than or equal to -0.9 + or - 0.2, and a metallicity dispersion is determined to be sigma greater than or equal to 0.5 dex. Also noted is that the color distribution at a given luminosity appears to be positively skewed.

0351+026 - A QSO spawned by interacting galaxies

The results of a detailed investigation into the nature of the H I-rich quasi-stellar object 0351+026 are presented. An improved H I profile reveals the presence of two distinct components. A high-quality CCD image clearly shows the presence of two galaxies. The brighter galaxy hosts the QSO while the less luminous companion has a prominent, apparently stellar nucleus. Moreover, this image also shows streamers of nebulosity emanating from the two galaxies and has an overall morphology which is highly reminiscent of that seen in other strongly interacting galaxies. Optical spectroscopy of the system shows that the forbidden O III emission lies between the two nuclei and there is strong evidence of stellar absorption lines in both the host and companion galaxies. Overall, the data suggest that this system represents a violent encounter between two low-luminosity H I-rich galaxies. The possibility exists that this collision has triggered the QSO activity in the brighter galaxy.

Infrared photometry of the semistellar nucleus of M31

New broad-band infrared JHK data and narrow-band CO and H2O indices for the semistellar nucleus of M31 are presented. The data were obtained specifically to test a prediction of a recent synthesis model by Faber and French in which the ratio of dwarf-to-giant light increases strongly in going from the bulge to the nucleus of M31. The new infrared data do not support such a model. Some alternative explanations for the behavior of the various indices are given, but the apparent conflict between the Faber-French interpretation of the strength of the Na I 8190 A feature and our data is not satisfactorily resolved.
