User accommodations on Space Station Freedom

The historical background of the SSF is overviewed, and current developments in methodology used to accomodate specific user requirements and physically integrate payloads on the station are discussed. Particular attention is given to the science and technology opportunities provided to commercial and government-sponsored users. Evolution of the SSF design and utilization impacts on design philosophy are also considered.

Space Station Freedom - Technical and management challenges

The development of the Space Station is reviewed, focusing on the technical and managerial aspects of the program. The optimization of the Space Station configuration, utilization impacts on design, technical aspects of the distribution systems, and the problems of designing for a lifetime of 30 years or more are discussed. In addition, cost reduction studies, testing and verification, determining the assembly sequence, and operational communications and support systems are examined. Managerial aspects of the program include organization, program control, management tools and processes, and the integration of elements from the international partners.

Getting ready to go

The reevaluation of the Space Station that has occurred over the past two and a half years is reviewed, and the system development that has been recently initiated is discussed. Upcoming developments with regard to laboratory outfitting, extended duration Orbiter, and logistics operations are summarized. The goals of the first launches are discussed, and the aims of the succeeding manned flights are examined.

NASA and the Space Station - Current Status

In the baseline configuration of the Space Station, NASA engineers have provided for a range of modifications that will enlarge the capabilities available to future users. An extensive definition and design study has been completed which is supplemented by a critical evaluation of the Space Station configuration; a three-year technology-development effort has also drawn to a close which examined operational factors and restructured program management responsibilities. Costs have been estimated on the basis of the revised configuration in order to insure full consistency for program funding plans.
