Controlling Solar-Power Systems With Distributed Processors

System undergoing development uses distributed microprocessors to monitor and control photovoltaic power system. Equipment increases life expectancy and reliability of power system and decreases costs. Adapted to vehicular, residential, and commercial solar and nonsolar power systems. Equipment especially desirable in systems with overall power levels above few kilowatts.

Automatic Monitoring of Switching Power Supplies

Fast analysis of switching waveforms allows detection of impending failures. Switching power conditioner converts dc power from source such as battery or solar cell array to well regulated dc at convenient voltages and currents. Concept originally developed for space stations and spacecraft also suitable for power conditioning equipment in aircraft and in terrestrial photovoltaic power systems.

Power subsystem automation study

Generic power-system elements and their potential faults are identified. Automation functions and their resulting benefits are defined and automation functions between power subsystem, central spacecraft computer, and ground flight-support personnel are partitioned. All automation activities were categorized as data handling, monitoring, routine control, fault handling, planning and operations, or anomaly handling. Incorporation of all these classes of tasks, except for anomaly handling, in power subsystem hardware and software was concluded to be mandatory to meet the design and operational requirements of the space station. The key drivers are long mission lifetime, modular growth, high-performance flexibility, a need to accommodate different electrical user-load equipment, onorbit assembly/maintenance/servicing, and potentially large number of power subsystem components. A significant effort in algorithm development and validation is essential in meeting the 1987 technology readiness date for the space station.

Algorithms for the Automated Power Systems Management

The system breadboard for the demonstration of Automated Power Systems Management (APSM) functions has been designed, fabricated, and is in the final stages of verification and testing. APSM functions fall into categories of fault detection and correction, commanding system and subsystem test and diagnoses, relay position monitoring, data acquisition and processing, and power management. All these functions are accomplished through software residing in 8-bit microprocessors dedicated to each group of Viking Orbiter power breadboard subassemblies and a 16-bit microprocessor serving as the central processor for the power system. This paper describes key monitoring, diagnostic, and control algorithms used in the APSM breadboard.

Development of automated power system management techniques

The basic approach in the automated power system management (APSM) implementation is to use one central microprocessor for the overall power system supervision and several local microprocessors dedicated to one or more major subassemblies to perform simple monitoring and control functions. Communication between the central and each local processor is through a dedicated two-wire network employing serial data transfer. The block diagrams of the processors, the data bus characteristics, and the software functions and organization are presented.
