Solar-A reformatted data files and observing log

An overview is presented of the Solar-A telemetry data files which are to be created and the format and organization which the files are to use. The organization chosen is to be efficient in space, to facilitate access to the data, and to allow the data to be transportable to different machines. An observing log file is to be created automatically, using the reformatted data files as the input. It will be possible to perform searches with the observing log to list cases where instruments are in certain modes and/or seeing certain signal levels. A user will be able to search the observing log and obtain a list of all cases where a given set of conditions are satisfied. An event log will be created listing the times when the instrument or spacecraft modes change.

The EUV dayglow at high spectral resolution

Rocket observations and spectra of the dayglow spectrum of the terrestrial atmosphere between 840 and 1860 A are studied. Three bands of the N2 c-prime 4 system are seen clearly resolved in the dayglow. Analysis of high-resolution N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield data shows no anomalous vibrational distribution as has been reported from other observations. Altitude profiles of the observed O and N2 emissions demonstrate that the MSIS-83 model O and N2 densities are appropriate for the conditions of the rocket flights.

X-ray calibration of a virtual phase 1024 x 1024 CCD

Results are presented on a calibration with X-rays of a front-illuminated virtual phase CCD with a 1024 x 1024 pixel array, performed as a part of the Solar-A preparation, which is a joint Japanese-U.S.-UK space project scheduled for a launch in August 1991. In the experiment, absolute quantum efficiency (QE) of a virtual CCD was measured at 14 wavelengths between 5.4 and 67.7 A, and its flat field responses to the illumination by C-K and Al-K X-rays were investigated together with its imaging properties in visible light. Higher than expected QE measurements were obtained at soft X-ray and EUV wavelengths; these are considered to be caused by fluorescence occurring in the absorbing layers on the CCD-entrance aperture.

The OI 989 and 1173 A multiplets in the dayglow

Sounding rocket measurements of the O-I 989-A dayglow obtained in 1978, 1980, and 1985 are discussed. The 989-A intensity and multiplet ratios are consistent with total branching losses (to atomic states other than the ground state) of 1.5-4 x 10 to the -4th. It is found that the 1173/989 intensity ratio is dependent only on the 1173/989 branching ratio and the atomic oxygen concentration when viewing upward from rocket altitudes.

S II and S III branching ratios in the 600- to 1200-A interval

Branching ratios are presented of singly and doubly ionized sulfur EUV emissions. They are determined by measuring the relative photon intensities of each of the branching components. For several transitions in S II for which mean lifetimes have been measured with fast-beam spectroscopy, the data presented here are used to determine transition probabilities. The S II transitions originate from the 2P, 4s-prime 2D, and 4s 2P terms and terminate on the metastable states of the ion. The S III transitions originate from the 3d 3D0, 4s 3P0, 3p3 3S0, 4s 1P0, and 3s3p3 1P0 terms and terminate on the metastable and ground ionic states. The results for S III include branching ratios involving intercombination transitions that affect ongoing modeling of the energy budget of the Io plasma torus.

Vacuum ultraviolet monochromator calibration using measured atomic branching ratios

It is noted that there now exists a compendium of experimentally measured transition probability ratios for ionized transitions of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, which can be used for calibration in the VUV spectral region. The emissions proposed for use in this context span the 485-1124 A wavelength interval, and can be easily excited using low pressure discharge lamps of conventional design and dispersed using a monochromator of moderate resolution.

EUV branching ratios for ionized nitrogen and oxygen emissions

Branching ratios of single ionized atomic nitrogen and oxygen EUV emissions that terminate on the metastable states of the respective ions are presented. The four NII ratios and the 482/515 A ratio in OII reported represent the first measured values. Details of the wavelength calibration procedures adopted and a brief discussion of two modeling implications of the measured ratios are included.
