Improved production and purification of 240Am by deuteron-induced activation of 240Pu target

An optimized method for production of 240Am via the 240Pu(d,2n)240Am reaction is reported. The optimized method produced 7.94 × 108 ± 7% atoms 240Am/mg 240Pu/µA-h. The yield and purity of the products from the optimized method are evaluated in context of the intended application to produce material to measure the cross-section for the 240Am(n,f) reaction. The presented method is also compared with other production methods available in the literature. Stacked target irradiations and radiochemical separations for simultaneous production of short-lived Ni and Ir isotopes

A method was developed for simultaneous production of neutron-deficient Ni and Ir isotopes by irradiation of stacked targets with a 50.5 MeV proton beam, followed by radiochemical separations to remove excess target material. The target, irradiation configuration, and post-irradiation radiochemical separations were developed and tested in a proof-of-principle irradiation. Radiochemical yields and purity of the products are discussed. Finally, the stacked target method, developed herein, can be used to produce other isotope pairs with appropriate beam tailoring.

Update of the Cesium-136 Cumulative Fission Yields at Multiple Neutron Energies

Nuclear data is foundational to several fields, including nuclear forensics. Nuclear forensics investigations of fission events, relies heavily on the cumulative fission yields, however several highly useful fission products suffer from very poor nuclear data including cumulative fission yields or associated uncertainties in that value. Cesium-136 is a highly relevant example of this issue, where the cumulative fission yield may be accurate but its uncertainty high enough to preclude its usefulness. In this work we evaluate and calculate an updated cumulative fission yield for 136 Cs for 235 U, 238 U, and 239 Pu at multiple neutron energies or sources using data obtained from irradiation campaigns. In all cases these newly determined cumulative fission yields provided small changes to the actual fission yields but had dramatic improvements to the uncertainty in those yields. These improvements in uncertainty will enable nuclear forensics end users to use 136 Cs data with more confidence.

Comparison of model predictions with measured proton-induced production of nickel and iridium isotopes

Calculations were performed to support method development for simultaneous production of Ni and Ir isotopes. Here, the work scope included development of the physical target, irradiation configuration, and post-irradiation radiochemical separations. The assumptions of predictive models previously developed were refined based upon the precise experimental configuration selected, including Os target material and a set of stacked targets for concurrent production of Ni and Ir isotopes. Model predictions of the reaction cross sections with EMPIRE 3.21 and implied isotopic yields are compared with proton beam irradiation measurements to refine model parameters and guide future experiments.

Measurement of distribution coefficients on TODGA resin and development of a group separation for mixed activation and fission product samples

Batch equilibrium experiments were performed to determine the distribution coefficients for Sc, Ir, and Ta on N,N,N’,N’tetraoctyl-1,5-diglycolamide (TODGA) resin in various acid matrices. Distribution coefficients were determined in hydrochloric acid (Sc, Ir), nitric acid (Sc, Ta), and a mixture of nitric acid and 0.2M hydrofluoric acid (Sc, Ir, Ta). The distribution coefficients determined through these experiments were then utilized to create a group separation method for activation products, fission products, and environmental constituents.

Locust: C++ software for simulation of RF detection

The Locust simulation package is the new C++ software tool developed to simulate the measurement of time-varying electromagnetic fields using RF detection techniques. Modularity and flexibility allow for arbitrary input signals, while concurrently supporting tight integration with physics-based simulations as input. External signals driven by the Kassiopeia particle tracking package are discussed, demonstrating conditional feedback between Locust and Kassiopeia during software execution. An application of the simulation to the Project 8 experiment is described. Locust is publicly available at https://github.com/project8/locust_mc
