High resolution stellar spectroscopy in the balloon ultraviolet

The JSC/SRL Balloon-borne Ultraviolet Stellar Spectrometer (BUSS) comprises a 40 cm telescope, an echelle spectrograph and a SEC Vidicon detector. Operating at an altitude of 40 km this instrument provides spectra of stars with 0.1 A resolution in the 2000-3400 A region. Observations made on 19 May 1976, are discussed.

Absolute flux calibration for the Mg II observations near 2800 angstroms

Observations of the Mg II features near 2800 A, obtained with a balloon-borne ultraviolet stellar spectrometer for five stars, have been calibrated against the absolute flux measures from OAO-2 spectrometer results. Equivalent widths of the Mg II resonance doublet and their respective subordinate lines, as well as the emission intensities, were evaluated where applicable.

The behavior of the Mg II doublet features near 2800 A observed in F, A, and B supergiants

The Mg II doublet features near 2800 A were recently observed in F-, A-, and B-type supergiants with a balloon-borne ultraviolet stellar spectrometer. The stars observed are Alpha UMi (F8 Ib), Alpha Per (F5 Ib), Eta Leo (A0 Ib), and Rho Leo (B1 Ib). The Mg II doublet features in Alpha UMi and Alpha Per show emission superposed on photospheric absorption. In the spectrum of Eta Leo, the Mg II lines are in absorption and show shortward-shifted components attributable to mass loss. In the spectrum of Rho Leo, the Mg II lines are primarily a composite of the photospheric and interstellar absorption features. The general behavior of the Mg II lines for supergiants of spectral types M through B are also discussed.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry from Gemini 11 of stars in Orion

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry in the wavelength region 2600-3600 A is reported for the bright early-type stars beta, eta, gamma, delta, iota, epsilon, sigma, zeta, and kappa Ori. The results are in good agreement with other observations, and, with the possible exception of the supergiants, are in good agreement with recent line-blanketed model atmospheres. There is evidence that the supergiants possess a small ultraviolet deficiency shortward of 3000 A relative to main-sequence stars of similar spectral type. The most extreme example of this phenomenon is the star kappa Ori.

Time-dependent hydrodynamic phenomena in the envelopes of the Be stars

Temporal and angular variations in the motion and distribution of circumstellar material about Be stars are studied by means of a simple hydrodynamical approach. The flow variables are each written as the sum of a known, steady-state axisymmetric term and a smaller component which contains both temporal and angular dependence. Substitution of these dichotomous expressions for the flow variables into Euler's equation and the continuity equation leads to a set of linearized equations for the terms which depend on time and angle. Solutions can be found to a somewhat approximated version of the linearized equations, and these solutions explain the qualitative features of the observed short-time variations.

Complex infrared emission features in the spectrum of beta Lyrae

Spectra of beta Lyrae over the spectral region from 5800 to 11,000 per cm (1.76 to 0.9 micron) at two different phases have been obtained. They show a remarkable emission-absorption complex at 9231 per cm, a highly structured emission at P beta, and several additional broad weak emissions.
