Oven Evaporates Isopropyl Alcohol Without Risk Of Explosion

Ordinary convection oven with capacity of 1 ft.(sup3) modified for use in drying objects washed in isopropyl alcohol. Nitrogen-purge equipment and safety interlocks added to prevent explosive ignition of flammable solvent evaporating from object to be dried.

Aqueous-Spray Cleaning System

Simple aqueous-spray cleaning system with overall dimensions comparable to large kitchen refrigerator constructed for use in cleaning hardware in shop. Made of commercially available parts and materials. Incorporates economical cleaner-and-rinse-recycling subsystem, as well as programmable logic-controller device for either manual or automatic operation.

Mechanical Agitation For Aqueous Cleaning

Cleaning basket placed in aqueous cleaning solution mechanically agitated by air spring. Compressed air at oscillating pressure supplied to air spring to produce repeated vertical motion of cleaning basket.

Tool Measures Diameters Of Posts With Limited Lateral Access

Simple tool used in conjunction with conventional vernier caliper to measure outside diameter of round post or tube to which lateral access limited. Chuck-like jaws closed gently onto end of post or tube. Tool slipped off without changing jaw setting, and distance between jaws measured with vernier caliper. In original application, posts are liquid-oxygen-injector posts surrounded by forest of many such posts on rocket engine. Used in other applications in which desire to measure diameters despite limited lateral access, provided there is longitudinal access.

Manifold For Flushing Tubes With Cleaning Solution

Custom-built manifold mounted on cleaning basket enables simultaneous flushing of 80 tubes with cleaning solution. In original application, tubes components of rocket-engine nozzle under construction. However, basic manifold configuration adapted to other applications (e.g., fabrication of heat exchangers) in which there is need for simultaneous cleaning of many tubes of identical size and shape.

Floating Vacuum Skimmer For Emulsion Cleaning

Floating skimmer, when connected to wet/dry vacuum cleaner and placed on surface of liquid in emulsion cleaning tank, draws off floating emulsified residue. Eliminates need for tedious operation.

Cheaper Custom Shielding Cups For Arc Welding

New way of making special-purpose shielding cups for gas/tungsten arc welding from hobby ceramic greatly reduces cost. Pattern machined in plastic. Plaster-of-paris mold made, and liquid ceramic poured into mold. Cost 90 percent less than cup machined from lava rock.

Rolling Stitch Welder For Foil

Hand-operated rolling spotwelder stitch-welds foil faster and more consistently than single-spotwelding gun without damaging it. Internal spring reacts against roller frame, exerting force on welding wheel when rollers contact workpiece.

Gilbert, Jeffery L.

Compact Pinch Welder

Spot welder designed for bonding insulated metal strips together. Compact, measuring only about 33.5 cm in its largest linear dimension. Pinch welder clamps electrodes on weldments with strong, repeatable force. Compressed air supplied through fitting on one handle. Small switch on same handle starts welding process when operator presses it with trigger. Provides higher, more repeatable clamping force than manually driven gun and thus produces weld joints of higher quality. Light in weight and therefore positioned precisely by operator.

Spot-Welding Gun Is Easy To Use

Electrical-resistance spot-welding gun designed to produce more welds per unit time by decreasing technician's effort and fatigue. Vacuum cups on frame secure welding gun to workpiece while compressed air drives welding tip against workpiece to make spot resistance weld. When weld completed, vacuum in frame cups released so frame and gun moved to position of next spot weld.

Electrode carrying wire for GTAW welding

A welding torch for gas tungsten arc welding apparatus has a hollow tungsten electrode including a ceramic liner and forms the filler metal wire guide. The wire is fed through the tungsten electrode thereby reducing the size of the torch to eliminate clearance problems which exist with external wire guides. Since the wire is preheated from the tungsten more wire may be fed into the weld puddle, and the wire will not oxidize because it is always within the shielding gas.

Morgan, Gene E.

Internal Filler-Wire Feed For Arc Welding

Tungsten electrode for gas/tungsten arc welding contains lengthwise channel for feeding filler wire to weld joint. Channel makes it unnecessary to feed wire through guides outside electrode, conserving valuable space near weld and protects wire from deformation by contact with other parts in vicinity of weld. Helpful in robotic or automatic welding.

Morgan, Gene E.

Internal Wire Guide For Gas/Tungsten-Arc Welding

Wire kept in shielding gas, preventing oxidation. Guide inside gas cup of gas/tungsten-arc welding torch feeds filler wire to weld pool along line parallel to axis of torch. Eliminates problem of how to place and orient torch to provide clearance for external wire guide.

Morgan, Gene E.

Internal wire guide for GTAW welding

A welding torch for gas tungsten arc welding apparatus has a filler metal wire guide positioned within the torch, and within the shielding gas nozzle. The wire guide is adjacent to the tungsten electrode and has a ceramic liner through which the wire is fed. This reduces the size of the torch and eliminates the outside clearance problems that exit with external wire guides. Additionally, since the wire is always within the shielding gas, oxidizing of the wire is eliminated.

Argon Welding Inside A Workpiece

Canopies convert large hollow workpiece into inert-gas welding chamber. Large manifold serves welding chamber for attachment of liner parts in argon atmosphere. Every crevice, opening and passageway provided with argon-rich environment. Weld defects and oxidation dramatically reduced; also welding time reduced.
