NASA Platform for Autonomous Systems (NPAS)

Autonomous operations are critical for the success, safety and crew survival of NASA deep space missions beyond low Earth orbit, including Gateway. For the past 10 years, Stennis Space Center (SSC) has been developing, and has demonstrated an innovative software platform, along with expertise and processes for implementation of autonomous operations.

NASA's NextSTEP Advanced Electric Propulsion Activities

Developing propulsion technology systems in the 50-to 300-kW per thruster range to meet the needs of a variety of long duration, deep-space mission applications beyond capabilities being developed for 40-kW SEP Tech Demo Mission. Three proposals were selected to develop and demonstrate NextSTEP advanced electric propulsion (EP) subsystems. The primary goal is during the third year, to demonstrate 100-hour of continuous, steady-state operation of propulsion subsystem at 100-kW in a relevant TRL 5 environment.

Managing Space Technology Development at NASA

NASA uses a structured process for managing projects that develop advanced space technologies and transition them into the designs of flight systems. The four-part process consists of formulation, approval, implementation, and transition. In the formulation phase, technology needs are derived from mission concept studies, various technical approaches for meeting the technology needs are identified, technical performance goals called Key Performance Parameters (KPPs) are established, and a project plan is developed. Prior to project approval, an Independent Formulation Review is conducted to ensure that the project objectives are aligned with the mission needs, and that the project is well planned to meet the objectives. In the implementation phase, the technology development project matures the technology, and progress towards the KPPs is evaluated in periodic status reviews. Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) are used throughout the project lifecycle to assess the progress of technology maturation. In the transition phase, technologies that are successful in achieving the required level of maturity are transitioned to a customer for further development, are used in system designs, or are thoroughly documented for resumption of development at a later date. The customer or end-user of the technology is involved in all phases of the technology development process.

The Photogrammetric Appendage Structural Dynamics Experiment

The Photogrammetric Appendage Structural Dynamics Experiment (PASDE) is a Hitchhiker payload scheduled to fly as part of the International Space Station (ISS) Phase-1 flight program to the Russian Space Station Mir. The objective of the first flight of PASDE on STS-74 is to obtain video images of the Mir Kvant-2 solar array response to various structural dynamic excitation events. This experiment will demonstrate the use of photogrammetric techniques for on-orbit structural dynamics measurements. Photogrammetric measurements will provide a low cost alternative to appendage mounted accelerometers to the ISS program. The PASDE experiment hardware consists of three instruments each containing two video cameras, two video tape recorders, a modified video signal time inserter, and associated avionics boxes. The instruments were designed and built at the NASA Langley Research Center, and are integrated into standard Hitchhiker canisters at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The Hitchhiker canisters are then installed into the Space Shuttle cargo bay in locations selected to achieve good video coverage and photogrammetric geometry. The measurement resolution of the instruments is expected to be on the order of 0.25 cm (0.1 in.).

Bilateral Impedance Control For Telemanipulators

Telemanipulator system includes master robot manipulated by human operator, and slave robot performing tasks at remote location. Two robots electronically coupled so slave robot moves in response to commands from master robot. Teleoperation greatly enhanced if forces acting on slave robot fed back to operator, giving operator feeling he or she manipulates remote environment directly. Main advantage of bilateral impedance control: enables arbitrary specification of desired performance characteristics for telemanipulator system. Relationship between force and position modulated at both ends of system to suit requirements of task.

Future applications of solid-state lasers for space remote sensing

This paper describes the Laser Atmospheric Sounder and Altimetry (LASA) and the Lidar In-Space Technology Experiment (LITE) projects, both of which will use solid-state lasers for remote sensing. LASA will provide long-term global measurements of aerosols and clouds in the earth's atmosphere. The LITE project is designed to demonstrate the first use of a lidar system in space, proving the technology required for future space-based lidar facilities such as LASA. A Shuttle flight experiment is currently being developed to enhance the technology and to formulate the design of the solid-state lidar system. Design diagrams of LITE and LASA facilities and their subsystems are presented.
