Ultrabroad-band x-ray source using a picosecond, laser-driven plasma accelerator

An ultrabroad-band x-ray source, with photon energies from 10 keV to >1 MeV, based on a picosecond laser-driven plasma accelerator, is characterized and used to radiograph high-energy-density-science relevant targets. The measured yield of 10 12 photons/shot is reaching the necessary photon yields to radiograph, in a single shot, high areal density objects and matter under extreme conditions. By focusing a short laser pulse (120 J, 1 ps) into a gas jet, a < 100 mrad electron beam with energies up to 350 MeV and up to 70 nC of charge was produced by a combination of laser self-modulation instability and direct laser acceleration. A foil placed at the exit of the gas jet is used to convert part of the electron beam energy into x rays through inverse bremsstrahlung and/or inverse Compton scattering, generating a bright, broad-band, high-photon-energy beam. This beam is used to radiograph a gold half hohlraum with a high-density sphere inside with relevant characteristics for high-energy-density science and inertial confinement fusion.

Macroscopic T nonconservation - Prospects for a new experiment

Breakdown of time-reversal invariance can be detected in macroscopic samples as a magnetic alignment along an electric field. It is shown that both fundamental and practical limits to the detection of this effect in paramagnets correspond to measurement of electron electric dipole moments down to d(e) of about 10 to the -28th e cm on 50-g quantities of EuS near its Curie point; this compares to the current limit of d(e) not greater than 10 to the -24th e cm. Strategies for still greater sensitivity are outlined.

Realizations of magnetic-monopole gauge fields - Diatoms and spin precession

It is found that the effective Hamiltonian for nuclear rotation in a diatom is equivalent to that of a charged particle in a background magnetic-monopole field. In certain cases, half-integer orbital angular momentum or non-Abelian fields occur. Furthermore, the effects of magnetic-monopole-like gauge fields can be experimentally observed in spin-resonance experiments with variable magnetic fields.

Calculations for cosmic axion detection

Calculations are presented, using properly nomalized couplings and masses for Dine-Fischler-Srednicki axions, of power rates and signal temperatures for axion-photon conversion in microwave cavities. The importance of the galactic-halo axion line shape is emphasized. Spin-coupled detection as an alternative to magnetic-field-coupled detection is mentioned.
