High Precision Piezoelectric Linear Motors for Operations at Cryogenic Temperatures and Vacuum

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory evaluated the use of an electromechanical device for optically positioning a mirror system during the pre-project phase of the Pluto-Fast-Flyby (PFF) mission. The device under consideration was a piezoelectric driven linear motor functionally dependent upon a time varying electric field which induces displacements ranging from submicrons to millimeters with positioning accuracy within nanometers. Using a control package, the mirror system provides image motion compensation and mosaicking capabilities. While this device offers unique advantages, there were concerns pertaining to its operational capabilities for the PFF mission. The issues include irradiation effects and thermal concerns. A literature study indicated that irradiation effects will not significantly impact the linear motor's operational characteristics. On the other hand, thermal concerns necessitated an in depth study.

Theoretical limits of dimensional stability for space structures

Future NASA missions such as the Great Observatories of the 21st Century, will require high dimensional stability (i.e., the system's ability to retain geometrical properties related to the system's performance) which will have to be maintained with micron to nanometer accuracy over the 5 to 10 years of mission lifetime. This paper examines the thermodynamic and other mechanisms which limit the dimensional stability of a space system. It is shown that the space system's performance will be limited below 0.1 per million dimensional stability.

Electrochemical evaluation of the p-Si/conducting polymer interfacial properties

Results are presented from an experimental investigation of the contact resistance and interfacial properties of a p-Si/conducting polymer interface for solar cell applications. The electronic character of the polymer/semiconductor function is determined by studying the electrochemical behavior of both poly(isothianapthene) (PITN) and polypyrrole (PP) in an acetonitrile solution on p-silicon electrodes. The results obtained indicate that while PITN is intrinsically more conductive than PP, neither passivates surface states nor forms ohmic contact.

Cell model and elastic moduli of disordered solids - Low temperature limit

The cell theory has been previously employed to compute the equation of state of a disordered condensed system. It is now generalized to include anisotropic stresses. The condition of affine deformation is adopted, transforming an orginally spherical into an ellipsoidal cell. With a Lennard-Jones n-m potential between nonbonded centers, the formal expression for the deformational free energy is derived. It is to be evaluated in the limit of the linear elastic range. Since the bulk modulus in this limit is already known, it is convenient to consider a uniaxial deformation. To begin with, restrictions are made to the low-temperature limit in the absence of entropy contributions. Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio then follow.

Electrochemical studies of thin films of conducting polymers and conducting polymer composites deposited on metal and semiconductor electrodes

Electrochemical studies indicate that poly(Isothianaphthene) or PITN, can be p-doped only. Electrochemical properties of PITN and Nafion-PITN in acetonitrile solutions containing tetra-phenyl Phosphonium chloride as supporting electrolyte are compared. In both cases, the electrochemical behavior of thin films are different from that of thick films. In addition, Nafion does not seem to alter the electrochemical properties of PITN. Cyclic voltammetric and chronocoulometric measurements were made to compute the diffusion coefficient of the counter ions. Electrochemical behavior of both PITN and Nafion-PITN in acetonitrile solution containing different counter ions are described. PITN, when electrochemically deposited, apparently neither passivates surface states present nor forms ohmic contacts with p-Si or p(+)Si single-crystal electrodes.

Effect of counterions on the formation of ohmic contact between p-Si and poly(pyrrole) film - An ac impedance analysis

Conditions under which poly(pyrrole) (PP) films form ohmic contact with single-crystal p-Si are described. Counterions affect both the conductivity and flatband potential, V(FB), values of poly(pyrrole). While paratoluene-sulfonate-doped PP acts like a switch, the impedance behavior of PP films doped with ClO4(-), BF4(-), or PF6(-) allows evaluation of the V(FB) of these films. The formation of 'quasi-ohmic' and 'nonohmic' contacts, respectively, of PP (ClO4) and PP films doped with other counterions, with p-Si, are explained in terms of conductivity of these films and V(FB) of PP films with respect to that of p-Si. PP film seems to passivate or block intrinsic surface states present on p-Si surface.

A summary report on the Flat-Plate Solar Array Project Workshop on Transparent Conducting Polymers

The proceedings and technical discussions of a workshop on Transparent Conducting Polymers (TCP) for solar cell applications are reported. This is in support of the Device Research Task of the Flat-Flate Solar Array Project. The workshop took place on January 11 and 12, 1985, in Santa Barbara, California. Participants included university and industry researchers. The discussions focused on the electronic and optical properties of TCP, and on experimental issues and problems that should be addressed for high-efficiency solar cell application.

Free Volume Considerations in Thermoplastic and Thermosetting Resins

The direct measurement of physical aging and of the volume changes which go on during the course of this aging is discussed. Data on PMMA showing its physical aging as measured by its stress relaxation response and the accompanying volume changes are presented. An indication of how one can measure the free volume both directly from the volume change itself and relatively directly via a new technique is given. The application of this new technique (electron spin resonance spectroscopy) to other polymer systems is demonstrated.

Morphology and Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Diglycidyl Ether of Bisphenol-A Toughened with Carboxyl-Terminated Butadiene-Acrylonitrile

The fracture toughness of an incorporation of a carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) elastomer in diglycidyl ether bisphenol A (DGEBA) resin was investigated. Measurements of dynamic mechanical properties, scanning electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering were carried out to characterize the state of cure, morphology and particle size and size distribution of the neat resins and their graphite fiber reinforced composites.

Pulse radiolysis of epoxy-based matrix materials

Electron beam pulse radiolysis (600 KeV, 3 nsec) experiments have been carried out on epoxy-based matrix materials. Time and wavelength resolved emission and transient absorption techniques as well as ESR studies have been utilized to identify and monitor short lived reactive intermediates resulting from energetic electron impact. An energy deactivation model based on the results of this work has been developed. Recombination of primary charged species is found to be fast, resulting in the formation of longer lived excited electronic states and radicals which control the subsequent energy deactivation.

Mechanism and kinetics of the curing process in a resin system

The present investigation is concerned with the development of a cure reactivity model for a resin system consisting of tetraglycidyl diaminodiphenyl methane (TGDDM) and diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS), taking into account the temperature range from 153 to 177 C. Differential scanning calorimetry and FT-IR spectroscopy have been used to investigate the cure kinetics of the resin with the objective to obtain a correlation between the total conversion and the rates of formation and disappearance of specific functionalities. It was found that the overall process can be satisfactorily described in terms of two first order processes.

A failure model for sealed nickel-cadmium batteries

A model has been developed to describe failure in electrochemical batteries. The model is based on the concept of the existence and subsequent growth of flaws which ultimately lead to battery failure. This model provides, in a natural way, for the statistical variability of lifetime data. The model as applied to the Crane data indicates that when the effects of temperature and depth of discharge are taken into account, the observed variability in lifetime data is due almost entirely to statistical variability inherent in the battery itself.

Viscoelastic Properties of Polymer Blends

Viscosity, shear modulus and other viscoelastic properties of multicomponent polymer blends are predicted from behavior of individual components, using a mathematical model. Model is extension of two-component-blend model based on Rouse-Bueche-Zimm theory of polymer viscoelasticity. Extension assumes that probabilities of forming various possible intracomponent and intercomponent entanglements among polymer molecules are proportional to relative abundances of components.
